Why go against what the cam was designed to use? The lobes are ground differently for each type. Chances are... It won't live long.

  4. The short answer is.... the ramps are ground different for each type.

I stole this quote on-line so believe it or not...........
"Metal isn't any different, both are cast cams with the same heat treatment, as are the lifters. The difference is that the hydraulic cam doesn't have the valve lash clearance "take-up" ramp ground into the lobe profile, to softly take up the valve lash clearance without pounding parts to death. Run solid lifters on a hydraulic cam and it will beat the valvetrain to death, along with the difference between durations caused by the lack of the clearance ramp will make the cam seem much bigger with solid lifters on a hydraulic cam.

Not something you want to try to do.

There are guys getting away with running solid ROLLER lifters on a hydraulic roller cam, but it is a special situation discussed with the cam manufacturer to get the cam profile compatible. They run the solid roller lifter with very little lash clearance, like .004-.006", real tight, so it comes as close to zero when running without actually being zero clearance and holding the valve off the seat when it should be closed."

I did use a hydraulic OHC cam with solid followers. In the old days I heard of people doing the same with standard pushrod V8 engines. Think '49 Olds. You could buy kits that allowed you to collapse the hydraulic lifters to run as solids. The story I heard was that hydraulic cams were ground without the take up ramps that solid lifter cams have. So, in theory a hydraulic cam with solid lifters would be a little"hotter" than either of the other stock cams. But you needed to keep a .002 lash adjustment to make up for the loss of the ramps. This would seem to result in a worn out cam or lifters or burned valves pretty soon, as it would be pretty hard to maintain that while the engine was heating up. But for my effort with a 3 liter Nissan SOHC V6 I got records in F/BGS at Muroc and El Mirage. So it seemed to work for that.

Cannot say I have a old set of Roads hyd lifters which were what we call anti pump I think. No info but as I remember they ran them on solid came in some very fast cars.

I seem to recall that this was done way back with the Ford 2.3 four cylinder.
