So, there I was....At the grocery store when a buddy pulls into the parking lot in his "newly acquired" T-Bucket. It peaked the curiosity of people and a few gathered around it to have a look. I have to admit that it does look cool. Red with a stock 350 with lots of shiny stuff on it. The headers are the typical t-bucket headers that pop out and run straight down the sides and are nicely mildly loud. Big wide tires on the rear with shiny rims....you get my drift... A typical t-bucket build.

Now, my buddy doesn't realize that I am there and had seen him pull in. A couple of teens start to ask him questions about his t-bucket. Of course, one question is "did you build this'? His answer was "yes I did".... Well, I was at his place when it was delivered on the truck as it sits today....He continues with his answer that he had built it from the ground up and also formed the body from a fiberglass mold in his garage. According to him, he rebuilt the 350 motor and built the frame with out a jig. It impressed the teens and a couple of other people. Big thumbs up to you, dude...

I had to let my presence known to him, so I asked him a few questions. Nothing too hard....I asked with my typical smart ass smirk and head nod, "Hey, Bob, is it? When you built this thing, was it hard to get the parts "shipped to you?" "Did you get the parts from CRAIG'S LIST". "I'll bet those parts had to come on a big truck, huh?".....Of course he just laughed.

It cracks me up that people have to pull this crap to make their self's feel good. Friend or not, just knock it off! I especially crack up at the people who spend big money to have a car built for them at a shop and then tell people that "Yep, I did it".

Has anyone else run into a something like this?

I'm just a hobbyist compared to my Son who's very serious about car and engine building. He's busted a few that claimed their ride was built by themselves or a close friend when all along it was my Son's work.

you can weed the wanna be's out in a few seconds after they tell you they built it by asking a few detailed technical question's.

  4. I've known people who lied so much about things they actually didn't do, that they start to believe it!

I have done enough "crazy shit" in my life, I don't need to make up stories.

Absolutely. Several years ago my bro had a '69 Camaro. Its was a typical rusty WI car. After replacing every panel except the hood & one door (IIRC), & removing the vinyl top (which we were told could never be made to look good), we painted it BLACK w/ purple pearl & some (cool at the time) stripes. It looked great. I accidentally opened my car door into it & chipped the paint. After he enjoyed it for a while, he traded it to a local body guy (who we had both worked for at some time). He touched up the chip (tough job on pearl), & started telling everyone he built & painted it.
    Why?
I had also did a flame job on a guy's yellow Chevy truck. Nobody else would attempt it around here. He won best paint at some show with it. After he sold it, I saw it at a show & asked who did the flames. Credit was given to the shop that did the less than stellar body & paint. Not the guy (me) who painted the flames.
    Why?
    I don't get it...

  6. Yes,had a guy tell me all about a chopped 40 sedan he built but know he had bout the car from my friend Alex several years ago,I went and found Alex at the motel and told him he old sedan was there and it had been painted and he said lets go see it.

When we arrive on the scene the man was telling a group standing around how he had chopped the top and made the drivers door suicide but it was so much work he decided not to do the passenger side,I looked at Alex and said,"How about that line of BS?"

Alex looked back and said,"It's his car and to be honest he is telling the story correct, the only difference is he says he did the work,if he can live with it so can I why bust his bubble, besides he did PAY for the work. HRP

I got a story too kinda along the same lines.

I put together a 71 grand prix. I rebuilt the 400 and turbo 400 trans. Usual engine build, forged flat top pistons, 68 hi compression heads, ram air 3 cam, etc. All my buddies had been thru the answer and question scenario many times with me.

Anyway one day had the girlfriend friend with me and we pull in somewhere and there's a bunch of guys standing around and as we get out of the car a couple of them stop and stare and one of them yells over, " great sounding car, what's under the hood?" In a heartbeat the girlfriend yells back,"30 over 400, port and polished 68 hi po heads with gasket matched intake, ram air 3 cam, totally reworked carb with internal mods, spark box on the distributor, reworked the advance curve, ram air 4 oil pump and 1 3/4" headers bolted to a reworked and kitted turbo 400" they just stood there dumbfounded, a few older guys just started giggling. We walked inside and I asked her where all that came from? She grins and says "got no idea what the hell I just said but I've heard you say it so many times I know it by heart" I just laugh my butt off....

Why someone has to piss on a “buddy’s” parade is beyond me. Who gives a crap if the guy said he built it. He wasn’t taking anything away from anyone. Worse was calling the guy out on it. Wow, with friends like you who needs enemies!!

I taught Gene Winfield how to chop a top. He came by one day while I was letting Von Dutch practice with my pinstriping brushes I hand made from the hair of Ed Roth he lost in a bet.

  11. I've seen people do it and they almost always get caught in their lies. It's really a rather small fraternity, this car culture, and someone is usually gonna call the person out on it. It's a whole lot less embarrassing to tell 'em, "no I didn't build it", give credit where credit is due, than to get caught up in a bald face lie.

I've seen it with a few of my muscle car friends, but the only instances i had anything like that was from a big ongoing car projects thread i had over on the garagejournal sister site and someone had been grabbing pictures from there and reposting them on another forum and instagram claiming they were his. Nothing big or dramatic came of it, but he had been tagging a bunch of companies in them, i guess to either try and get some attention of free stuff?

A little different, and i guess more irritating, my dad's more one of the 'indoor kids', doesnt have any interest in cars and subsequently we've never worked on anything together, never been to my shop, etc. Cut to a chance meeting with a friend of his around town, and my father had been telling stories about helping out, doing this or that on whatever cars. I never called him out on it and i didnt burst his bubble to his friend, it was just weird

The first clue I get is when they refer to their coupe or sedan as a roadster.

Right after I bought my '50 Ford 2dr sedan, I had a fellow come over to me in a parking lot and told me he painted my car. I asked him "What's with the little bubbles in the paint?". He stuttered and said he had let a guy use his shop to paint it.

My wife bought me a 1950 Ford F1 for my birthday 12 years ago. The fellow she bought it from told her there was no bondo, rust or fiberglass. He had bought the truck already done and didn't know a thing about it. Plenty of bondo and fiberglass throughout and the front fenders were fiberglass. I saw him a few years later and told him about all the bondo and fiberglass. Later at a show, I did meet the person that built it. He was telling me about everything he did to it and I told him about all the correctons I had to do to the wiring. Later, I did feel bad about saying that to him. He was a nice guy and had done some good work on the truck.

I built my buddy's '50 Merc. ZZ4, 7R4, P/S, power disc brakes, curry 9 inch, a/cond, rebuilt front end and more. The first thing he tells people is that he has his dream car because of Ron (me). I always use "we" when talking about working on it. After all, Larry was usually there and he could hold a flashlight like a pro. Larry talks about selling the Merc but I told him I wouldn't be interested because I know the guy that did all the work on it.

I can not see purposefully making another person look bad especially on such a victimless crime. I am 100% certain no one has ever told a lie ever here.

  21. I usually point out the stuff I didn't do on my cars. I don't like to take credit for something I didn't do, that can get you arrested in some circumstances. Once you lie about something, you have to remember the lie and who you told it to. Thats too much work for a lazy man.

Remodeling business is the same. Just finished a high end kitchen, did all the design work, choosing appliances, telling the owner things she wanted couldn't be done because of codes etc.
Heard the owner telling her friends when it was done how it turned out exactly the way she planned it. As long as they pay on time I'm happy.

I had a buddy tell me one of my customers was walking around a car show showing off pictures of the car "he was building at home". Too bad the pictures were taken in my shop while I was building it! Guess the guy wasn't smart enough to realize most the guys at the show have been to my shop, even if they hadn't seen the car there (most had) they would recognize the shop. My buddy called him on the BS, he told the guy he liked my shop so well he had one built "just like" it in his backyard and I must be building a similar car. Yeah, right, OK.

This just happened to me a few months ago. I read a story about a hot rod 32 pickup owned by a friend, full page article listing off all the pro work done by guys in the area, when, in fact, I built the chassis, fit the firewall and dash, hung the column and hooked it up. I did all this as a gift twelve years ago for this guy's fiftieth birthday at the request of his wife. He did help me, but again, I did the work with no mention of these other hoohas.
So....emails flew back and forth with the promise to be made right. I wasn't looking for credit, but sure as hell wasn't gonna let someone else steal my thunder, and to back up the story with facts, there are a lot of build pics on my website as proof......click on the 32 ford pickup, I'm the ugly one.....

I have always built my own cars. But, I'm in my 70's now and I don't have what it takes to do another one. But I will never claim someone else's work as my own. I have nothing to prove concerning my skills. I did that YEARS ago.

  26. I’ve built a few cars, everything I’ve owned has been modified somewhat by me.also owned a couple mint originals

I’ll take credit where credits due and give credit when it’s due.

Like has been said why lie, now I needs to remember the lie and who’s I told it to.....I’m to lazy for that nonsense and shenanigans

I 90% built a Track T several years ago. Sold it before finishing it to spend the $$$ on another project. Saw it several years later at a cruise. All the dude had done was drop in a running engine/tranny and plumb it. He had done absolutely nothing on the chassis, body or interior. I walked up and told him I liked the looks of the car. He didn't recognize me and started telling me all about it. After about 5 minutes I asked who built the pillow blocks on the left lower frame rail that the supported the steering shaft (you couldn't see them with the hood on). He said he did, I asked, "Where did you find the bushings in that size and before you answer, are you maybe a little bit full of shit?" Everyone on both sides of him got real quiet. I also pointed out that he had bought it not running and all he did was make it run. He recognized me, got a funny look on his face and walked off. Everyone around started clapping. Guess he had spent the entire day telling everyone all about his build.
