I need to replace the brakes and leaking rear axle seals in my '60 Comet wagon. When I took off the wheel, I noticed that I have the smaller "sedan" brakes...not the larger "wagon" brakes. I was told that some of the wagons came from the factory with the smaller brakes for some reason...????
Now, I guess my question is, did some wagons also come from the factory with "sedan" axles? The parts store lists a different seal for sedan vs. wagon and I want to get the right ones before tearing the rear apart. There is a drastic price difference between the two, also.
Is there any way of knowing what I have without pulling the axles? I always ***umed the sedan and wagons would have had the same rearend.

Pull it apart and take the old seal with you to the parts store. Or try MACs auto parts , and check their online catalog for Comet/Falcon.

I had a 60 Comet wagon. Definitely had the same wheel seals as sedan. I don't think they went to the larger axle in Wagon and Ranchero until 61 regardless of what NAPA or whoever says.
Yours should be 2.03" OD by 1.12" ID, original part number C0DW-1177-A
The 61 big axle takes a 2.06" OD by 1.24" ID

I just checked Kragen and they show one for sedan, one for post-'61 wagon and one for pre-'61 wagon (#13415). If that last one is the correct seal, they want $97.99 each. I hope you're right aobut it being the same as the sedan. Otherwise, I may have to swap rears.

I remember as a teenager folks swapping diffs with no consideration for ratio's or brakes, just so it would keep them on the road, so it could be anything especially since so many years had past.
Check the ratio while you are at it it maybe you have ended up with a slightly beeter highway ratio.
