Compatible gas tank for 40 merc coupe and...

What's a compatible gas tank for the 39/40 merc coupe? I'm filling in the filler neck area on the rear fender and will gas up from the trunk area. Will a 39/40 ford work? Not sure and installing parellel leaf in the rear instead of the orig, what can I use and what's a good soure. Any help or direction appreicated, Thanks.

I don't know how simillir they are, but we used a tank from a 68 mustang on my brother -n-laws 46 Ford coupe. All we did was measure the area where the tank was to sit, went to the junk yard and started measuring.

 

Recently someone mentioned a certain JEEP gas tank that was almost a direct replacement, for I THINK a 40 ford?

I would think a 39-40 Ford would work. I have a 36 Ford tank in my 40 Ford, the only difference is the filler bung hole (he said bung hole....huh huh huh) is at an angle where a 40 Ford is straight. If you arent going to fill through the fender, that wont matter.

 

I have a 40 tank. Looks good, probably needs cleaned.
