Blasting works fine, you just have to get the right kind of media. Some is to heavy and coarse, gets it hot faster, some is to fine and doesn't do the job. someone on here said black diamond media, ive never used it but ive heard good things about it.

as far as a DA goes, it doesnt work if its heavy surface rust.

Ok here is my humble opinion. DON'T HAVE IT CHEMICAL DIPPED!!! By its very nature the chemical will permeate every nook and cranny and give you hell when you try to paint the thing. Even if you can get paint to stay on or have the whole thing neutralized the chemical will still work back out of the nooks and crannys and cause the paint to bubble or flake...

Take the body to a talented media blaster and they can actually take dents out of a body! Sure there are dumbasses that'll warp stuff but find the right guy and you'll never look back. It beats the pants off a weekend of sanding!!!

  3. I'm a fan of the Ospho. It takes a while though. I use some 000 steel wool and lotsa elbow grease.

Thanks again for all the tips guys, I picked up a couple 3m wheels, some naval jelly osho. So far I've just played around with the 3m wheels and they work pretty good I'm going to give the naval jelly a go over the weekend.. not doing the whole car just the frame at this point.

I found it at my local Do-it-center.. which I thought was odd, since 70% of the time I walk in there, they don't have what I need.

Excellent exchange on an issue that's becoming more and more important as all the good, old stuff is disappearing.

  11. Hey guys,

I grabbed one of the 3m wheels and it's working rather well.
One did the entire roof of my sedan, which was nothing but surface rust. Prolly too me 12 hours total for the roof.
I like how it won't gouge the metal. I got mine chucked up in an old drill that spins 500rpm all day long.

Anyhow, I was looking into the OSPHO stuff to treat panels as I strip them.
Cause it's going to take me a while:eek:

    Anyhow, from their site http://www.skybryte.com/

    It says
Does that mean I can skip epoxy and go straight onto filler and urethane primer?
BTW I'm thinking of using the summit branded paint.
Just ckecking, I don't want to be bit in the ass by a chemistry mistake.

    Thanks
    Thom

I have never done a whole body but have done large sections of bodies by soaking a bath towel in BSC rust converter wringing it out and then covering ythe metal. Be sure to smooth out any wrinkles in the towel. Let stand 1/2 hr then remove towel. Do not allow towel to dry out.
