Technical Compressor Oil Question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Al T, Mar 29, 2020.

  1. I’ve got an old DeVilbiss upright compressor in my shop and it calls for 20 weight engine oil. Doing a little research online it seems that the consensus is 10W30 is the closest match performance/specification wise to 20 weight engine oil. Before I add some 10W30 to the case, does this sound right?

    Thanks in advance.

Wouldn't you want non detergent as the compressor does not have a filter?

You can get straight weight oils at farm stores and Oriellys

You can also buy compressor specific oil. NAPA sells it as NAC # 82-6020 although it is advertised as 30wt
I believe Sta-Lube makes a compressor oil too

Yes, non-detergent 20wt is what you are looking for. Older compressors usually wanted 20 or 30wt non-detergent oil depending on ambient temperature. Newer ones usually use a synthetic compressor oil.

Non detergent 30 w is all I’ve ever used in older compressors and it has helped my compressors last for a lot longer than they should have. It seems like Castrol is what I always find on the shelf , although I have no preference. I change it when it looses its golden colour.

I used regular 10w30 for years with no problems. Then I toured the amsoil plant and switched to amsoil compressor oil now the compressor sounds better ( quieter) .
