Have a ten year old Craftsman (I Know!) 25 gal tank, 5 hp, oilless compressor that has stopped working. Decided last week it wasn't going to fill the tank anymore, checked the piston. It was "very worn" replaced, then it would only power up to about 50psi. Checked reed valve in head, seems ok. Any suggestions other than "get a real compressor"? Thanks
If your piston was "very worn" then i'd say your cylinder is probably not much better and the reed may look OK but still be a little weak. I had what sounds like the same/similar Craftsman compressor which I put up with for years. After mine no longer managed much pressure, I gave it to a friend who had it rebuilt for around $100. He loves it, but only uses it for airing tires and stuff. I finally choked up the $ and bought a 60gal standup with a big pump and WISH I had bought it much sooner. So my suggestion is to bite the bullet and "get a real compressor" If you use air tools much, you won't regret it. It runs all the big airtools and pumps up/shuts off quick AND is much quiter than the Craftsman was. You don't spend half the work day waiting for it to get back up to pressure so you can continue working and its so nice not to listen to it buzzing away all day. BUT Don't get the Craftsman 60gal - it is still loud and takes a long time to pump up. Get an industrial quality one - you will love it.
Hey...check out the surplus section in the princess auto catalogue...I think I saw a kit for a craftsman oiless compressor in there for pretty cheap. I think it comes with piston , ring and cylinder..must be a common problem because I had the same trouble. I got fed up and bought a big 5 horse 80 gallon compressor....Jethro
MYRIDE, if your planning on a new compressor, check out House of Tools in Edmonton. They sell EAGLE compressors; made here in Calgary. There should be a big sale comming up soon. I bought a 60 gal. upright, 5 HP, twin cylinder. (hooking it up today!!)
Thanks guys. It would seem that this is a pretty common problem indeed. Guess asking a hobby compressor to handle what I need it for was too much to ask. Will bite the bullet" and look into a stand-up, oiler with at least a 60 gal tank....*sigh*, there goes the parts account...lol
