Technical Conduit for mock roll cage?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by madz28, Sep 13, 2015.

  1. I'm not sure what kind of Original 4 point cage your talking about but as spec's change it's my understanding you must meet the New requirements. That's why you see Older F.E.D's with upgraded cages. The Old single loop bars don't go down the track.

I have an old (early 60's) cage that came out of an older drag car. Simple loop and two rear arms. I'm sure it did not meet too many inspections. I was thinking about putting it in my car just for vintage runs. I have no room in front for even a six point cage. I am sure it would p*** at some of the local tracks I go to, they don't inspect much during the Nostalgia events. I now realize that the Hot Rod reunion at River Bend would be out of the question. Probably better to run with out one. I was under the ***umption that only an under 10 sec p*** required a cage inspection. Thanks

  3. wraymen; N.H.R.A. has a huge web sight. They also list names and Ph.#'s for each aria. My advice is to make direct contact to your local inspector and get specific answers to each of your concerns. Then when you do get to a track you won't get any surprises. I've been very fortunate to have had a west coast inspector as a personal friend as well as a Club member. He will be missed in many many ways. We lost him to Cancer this Spring.

Yes I should have looked at the NHRA rules a bit closer. The H.R. reunion was a on my want to do list. I have enjoyed going there for a few years now as a spectator. I will probably be happy hitting some of the small tracks closer to home. I try and watch the tech guys and have seen some shaky stuff p*** muster. I have been going to mostly nostalgia events and they seem to ease up on the rules. They know most of the guys running and when some of the rare stuff comes out its usually not a full p***. They barely looked at a charger I ran at a MOPAR event years ago. Sorry to hear about your friend, lost my Dad and his Dad years ago to the same thing.

If you do mention anything to a tech man in inquiries get the lingo right. A cage is a halo and windshield bars included, a bar is a supported main hoop, usually 6 or 8 points. 11.99-9.99 and under 135 MPH, roll bar, 9.99 and quicker and 135 MPH and faster, roll cage. 9.99 cars need the cage to be certified and also require window nets and the driver to be fully suited in gloves, nomex, shoes, SFI helmet, etc. About $1,000 in clothes and accessories when you add it all up at current prices for decent stuff. Anything can be more complicated than it has to be. I like Kiwi's idea with the cardboard. I've done partial boards for weird stuff. All bars and cages for racing require padding where one's head or body may make contact from a seated position. Have fun...

If your speed and ET dont drop below 10 seconds you are OK with the roll bar hoop and two back bars as long as the dia is 1 3/4" or larger. Only cars that go quicker then 10 need to get the tubing certified (sonic for wall thickness-OD measured- correct placement) and have a SFI sticker attached. Your local track tech prob does not have the equip to check the tubes. The sonic tester to check wall is $1000(good one)
