I'm very new to the old, since before my 50 Chevy I just got the oldest car I had was a 67 coronet.I've been tryingto Google info on the Chevy but everything leads me to this forum.my styleline has had the top removed and I will be making a Carson style top. What I'm confused about is, the sticky says no rat rods ...I looked at member pics and saw plenty cars I thought would be considered rat rods but apparently I don't know the proper definition of the term.can someone please clarify?thanks and I look forward to talking with the people that have already helped me so much before I registered
Well first off let me welcome you to the HAMB. You will find lots of advice on how to build that 50 Chevy, some good and some bad. I like the idea of the Carson top so good luck with that. I'm sure you will get different opinions here on what a rat rod is so I will give you mine. Rat rods are a mixture of different parts and in a lot of cases are not built with safety in mind. It's like the more ugly you can make it the more rat rod it is. That's my two cents and I'm sure more HAMB people that know a lot more than I do will click in here and express themselves.....
Welcome aboard As for the RR question - probably the most important thing to understand on the HAMB is that it is the quickest way to start a ****-storm, which is not to be recommended. Just sayin' My suggestion is to learn slowly rather than leading with your chin Cheers.
It can be a fine line. My shop truck was built with tradition in mind, but has been called a rat rod many times by non car people. I tend to agree with Pug Man. Tags screwed to the floor to cover the driveshaft and a gate latch for a door handle make a rat rod.
A "rat rod", to me, is someone's idea of what they did back in the day, "because the kids didn't have a lot of money, so what they had went into the engine", without any regard for the actual facts. The rodent followers seem to think that garden tools, farm implements and kitchen utensils used as structural components, in a vehicle with old (or not so old) road signs as a floor, all done with booger welds and more splatter that a fat dude jumping off of a 20 story building, and they think this is "good" and "cool", because that's what they did "back in the day." I used to not realize the diffierence, then I discovered the H.A.M.B. Sit back and read the threads, look at the responses that are generated, look a the pictures, get a feel for the place. Besides the Carson top, what are your plans for the 50 Chevy?
Haha it was an honest question.I'm the last guy to start any drama Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
