Ok,,I'll try and make this make sense. My love child ( ok not really but ) Lemans seems to have some weird issues. First was told it was a 1962 as the vin starts with a 1962 code. 2: everyone said NO its a 61,,cause the front end is a 61 3: the vin and cowl tag correctly identify the car for what it is ie. Colors ,,model ,,drive line etc. 4: the tricky part,,just got the ***le and it says 1961 and that it has had only 1 owner prior to me,,even the milage is correct Sooooooooooooooooooooo,,is it then in fact a 1961 ? I mean it the ***le the Legal call on this. I mean even if it were a 62 with a 61 nose,,all the #'s match the ***le In a way I don't care cause I love the car,,but if its a real 61 Custom Coupe they seem rare ,,and making a drag car out of it may be a big no no
i believe back the they were ***led by what year they were first sold, not by model year. i could be wrong though, its been known to happen
well thing is ( and sorry if I misunderstood ) the car is a 61 visually ,,62 has a completely different front end,,the only thing saying 62 is the tags, but the car and ***le say 61
I think slinger means that it might be a 1962 model, but could have been sold in late 1961, and the ***le was issued as 61 because it was sold that year.
Yeh, and my ***le has one VIN missing because some intelligent person at the state capitol typed it wrong. JB
What motor? Does it have the V-8? If so, my book says that the '61 had a two barrel, but the '62 had a four barrel.
I know many of you think 61 is a long time ago, but it's not that ancient. Cars were ***led as the year they were not the year they were sold. I.E. a 57 Chev sold in Oct. 56 wasn't ***led as a 56
Not sure I understand, but since that never stopped me before... Questions: Does the car LOOK like a '61?? Does the VIN match the ***le?? What was meant was that, in certain states ONLY, in the past the ***les were dated as to the year of first registration/sold, which would, in the vast majority of cases, be either the correct year of the vehicle, OR, the year before. Best example: Mustangs came out in April 1964, but Ford called them "1965" model year cars (because they could, and it was cool to have the latest/greatest). In my example, and in those states, there could be Mustangs ***led as "1964" whilst still being a 1965 model year car, if they were sold before Jan. 1, 1965. As to your car: if the VIN matches the ***le, it's 90% sure the car is a 1961. If you check a Pontiac factory service manual for that car, and IT states that the VIN codes to a 1961, it's a 1961. I am leery of the "someone told me its a 1962". Although a previous damage repair *might* have used 1961 parts, it seems less than likely, though possible. I have had both a 1968 Laverda 750GT (VIN 1268) ***led as a 1973, and a 1988 Citroën CX25GTi ***led as a 1986 (interesting story behind that one). So ***les can and do lie, but it's not that common. Cosmo
2 bbl ,,but was'nt that and option ? Cosmo The thing is The cars look different the front end on a 61 and 62 are different. everything visually on MY car says it is a 1961,,K the VIN on the post is the same # on the ***le Before we got the ***le we only had the vin and cowl to go by and it decodes as a 62 ,,The trim in and out colors etc are all correct to the car yet ***le states 61
my 51 caddy originally sold on 01/01/52, and therefore the state of OK, in all of thier brilliance ***led it as a 52. and will NOT change it to the correct 51.
Did you buy the car with a ***le / how did you apply for a ***le? In MN if there is no ***le, when you apply for one you need to include that type of info. I don't know how well MN people look over VINs and try to match them to year of manufacture. I always have used year of manufacture when I apply based on the VIN.
Yes ,,it is a clear New Jersey ***le ( was bought at auction so had to wait for ***le ),,like I said everyone who has seen it said it was a 61,,just the tags say 62,,and the 62 Vin # is on the ***le..Someone said it may have been an end of production car
Thanks, I was just "confused" on how you got the ***le. It could be a late model year thing like described. Maybe someone special ordered a '61 late in the year after they started to tool up for the '62 -- they put on the '61 parts as requested but since it came off the line with '62s it got those numbers? I could think of a devious way to do it using MN rules though!
lol,,No I'm fine with it,,Just that if by I guess Law it is a 61 ,,Custom Coupes are rare so I would not turn it into a Drag car
What about the rear lights and bumper, maybe it was wrecked and they put a different year front clip, and fixed it well enough you couldn't tell?
front clip wouldn't change what the ***le says,,and it has a 61 back end ,,no reveres e lights ,,,no signs of the front end ever being off the car
I had a 1959 Willys pickup truck that was ***led as a 1955 because the first two digits of the VIN were 55.
Might check and besure the rivet that holds the vin number is correct. Are if it is spot welded and a not glued.
