After I figured out the word "HA/GR" refuses to work with the "search" function, and I wanna keep track of all the ones being built... I'm gonna try and start this thread. If you have posted a (helpful) tech/build thread in the past, give us the damn link here! If you are planning on building one and have questions, ask them here. If you are in the middle of building one - show us some friggin' pictures! If you built one in the past, we want to know the trials and tribulations. I'm hoping this thread will still be added onto all thru the winter! GO! Eager minds want to learn!!! HA/GR Rules
Here http://www.ozrodders.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=7739&start=0 Here http://www.hot-rod.com.au/hambster/ And over Here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112323&highlight=qqmoon
So you've found out searching for HA/GR doesn't work too, huh? One trick I've found is to search for post my guys I know are into it, such as Mr Mac, Recycler, Rand Man, 3W Larry, Bob Hindman, and Sgt Mcd. Ive been planning to put together a post on our car, but dang-ol work and family get in the way.
Allright, here is a question. How are we measuring the width of the rear wheel? Are we going from where the tire bead sits on the rim or the overall width of the rim? Here are some pics of mine before dis***embly for painting started.
Hey REJ, looks like that things bout ready to race. Wheels are typically measured by the width of the area inside the bead.
REJ. . . kick *** man... i dig that car totaly. inspiring... makes me wanna get my pile of collected parts and start mockup for mine THATS the kinda spirit man... build it for one reason, and one only. Greg! cool thread idea holmes... VERY cool
I have some specific questions related to what I WANT to build- I want to build a Banjo rear with a Merc axle conversion. The rules say stock width rears only. First, is this custom rear legal? Second- what width should I go? Stock Merc width? Stock '39 width? Can I just pick? How about a Mustang II 8" ?, they're only 54" wide outside to outside I think. Rules say drop in distributor conversions ok, mags not ok. Can I run a Mallory dual point with a 2 piece cap? Can i run my 19" spindle mount wires with 3.25x19" tires please, please, please? regarding induction- the rules say era carbs only, and that's what I'll probably do, but how do we feel about Saaty Meteor "injectors" They're more of a carb than true injection. what was the decision on rear engines?
For the rear end we used mitsubishi L300 very similler to cusso the right width and ford bolt pattern also the added advantage of 4-11 gears LSD center also the ford tin hat p***enger car diff only because we had them one of our guys are running FED 18" spindle mounts dont see y not not sure on your injection dont know anything about it as for your dizzy was it avalable in 62 ?
The 8" or the custom banjo (preferred) should be okay. The "stock width" rule seems to be an effort to avoid the pinched look of modern drag style axles that can be 2 feet or more narrower than any stock vehicle version. The rules put no limit other than width on the wheels but modern alloys and spindle mount wires may not be be disallowed but they might be considered contrary to the nostalgia theme this cl*** is trying to establish. That same tire on a 19" Model A rim should fit well within that theme. Mallory dizzys go back a long way. Might be fine. The Meteors came out circa 1957 according to the redoubtable Iowahawk so yeah they're probably kosher but they might be more trouble than they're worth. They look righteous though. Personally I'd kill for a couple of NOS Winfields. May not work all that much better than Strombergs but they have some serious period racing cred. They have that "look".
What details do you need? Motor wise, it's running a stock 225 slant, with two Carter 2 bbls, truck four speed with a 350 gear under the rear. I was going with a 427 gear under the rear, but changed my mind as I think it would be too much gear for the motor that I plan on running later on. I'm in the process of building a 170 ci motor for it, shorter stroke and about 2000 more rpm's.
I have a concern about spindle mount wire wheels such as are used on FEDs. The "Bug" was an early '50s machine. The dragster/motorcylce wire wheels are from the wrong era. Almost everything that has been done so far looks OK to me, even those obviously out of era slant sixes, except that style of wire wheels. They are a product of the slingshot era, not the Gas Rail era. It stands out like a sore thumb and just looks wrong. Sorry Speed Merchants.
OK.......so if I decided to use a Volkswagen front axle, I would have to round up a kingpin type rather than a ball joint type, and ONLY because it's supposed to follow the vintage "Bug" style, right? (No pun intended) As for rear axle about anything goes, but it SHOULD be a banjo or front-load third member, and drum brakes. (I know where I can get a Ford 8.8" with discs, cheap.) Roger
This axle looks ALOT like a Toyota. I'm seriously thinkin' of building a Hambster. I've got a descent start with some of the parts I've got. Only thing that concerns me is where am I gonna run it??
