What are some of the ways to convert a transmission from a car with an open driveline to closed? Specifically, to a later Ford banjo closed driveline/rear end.

Cut ,Weld , Machine ! Not imposiable but much easier to convert the Banjo to a open shaft, kits available or not hard to do yourself if you have a lathe.

I don't want an open driveline. A closed driveline makes the rear suspension geometry perfect - never any bind as when you split the rear radius rods.

What kits are OK to use to convert the front? Which particular front Ford (or whatever) parts do I look for?

not uncommon to see Cad/Lasalle and Buick stick transmissions adapted to accept the Ford torque tube.

basicly need the tail housing from the Ford and cut and spline the Cad or Buick tail shft to fit the Ford U joint

    here's a couple Lasalles converted..

    Very helpful, thanks.

What non-Ford transmissions featured closed drivelines? If memory serves, some Buicks had them.

    and Chevy..

if you are using a moderate power plant
you could adapt the other motor to the Ford transmission..

the transmission's strength would be about on par with the banjo rear you are trying to keep..

I will be using something like a Pontiac straight 8, so modest power -- maybe a Ford tranny is a good idea.

Here is what I did with a Jeep 4wd T-5 5 speed trans to a ford V-8 torque tube.

    I've done it to a S-10 4wd trans too.

That is really nice. It seems you took advantage of the fact that the Jeep tranny wants a transfer case behind it - so no dealing with a long tailshaft. Your workmanship is exemplary. Looks like an interesting motor up front, too.
Thanks very much for the super idea.
