I'm swapping a 3 speed manual trans to an AOD in my 1958 ford custom 300. Can I just use the Lokar kit (ACA-1807)-sorry, i cant get the link to upload-to hook one of my column shift levers to the AOD so I have a column shifter? I understand it won't have the positive stops a normal auto column shift would, but that's ok with me.

You can make your column shifter work with or without the Lokar kit...

If you are using a Ford AOD, MAKE sure you hook up the Throttle cable to the trany and have it set BEFORE you drive it, or you my not drive it for long. Iceman

Yes, you can do it, but I think some time spent adapting, or making, a shift detent plate for the column would be time and effort well spent.

What you propose to do, without postive stops, is dangerous to you and others in the worst case and could result in serious ****** damage in the least case.

There is really lttle excuse to half *** a modification as significant as a ****** swap from stick to automatic.

  7. Do yourself a favor and find a 58 or 59 parts car with an automatic jacket and change it over. Yes you can use the 2-3 shift rod and hook it to the trans arm but let me tell you it's dangerous. If you should happen to hammer it while in Drive you may well end up in REVERSE at hard throttle. It's a difficult thing to explain to your Ins. Co. why you slammed into the car behind you. The shift detents in the column are there for a reason Not to mention the Neuteral start switch.

X2,change to an automatic column and the Lokar kit will work fine,if you do not have the shift detents aligned in an AOD it can cause severe damage in which case you'll need a large broom on hand to sweep up the damage. The Lokar TV cable is also easy to work with but you may want to add a return spring.

That is the biggest safety reason to use a real auto column

You guys have pointed out a few things I never thought of (neutral safety, shifting gears under acceleration...) that's why I asked. THANKS! I found out a 61-64 galaxie box and column is practically a bolt in swap, so that's what I am going to go with. Now, I just have to find one:)

Ok, I picked up a 59 auto column, next question...on an AOD, is the tv cable the same as a kickdown cable? Mine originally had a rod, but I am going to swap it with an aftermarket cable.

No, it's not a kick down cable........it a throttle pressure valve control........just like you've read about GM 700R4 and 2004R trannies, it MUST be adjusted properly AND pulled by the throttle the correct amount as the throttle is opened, or it will fry the ****** in short order. Not to be feared, necessarily, as they function wonderfully in production cars, but require proper control to do so in adapted applications.

A search here on the HAMB and/or the ****** specialty shops/ Ford Forums/Google, etc, should turn up the data you need.

Aren't all modern neutral safety switches on the ****** and not on the column?

Probably, but that only partially solves the problems of an ungated, or improperly gated, shift lever. Can still lead to accidental engagement of a gear position you DON'T want at an inopportune time.
