I've wondered about this for a few years no and I would appreciate the power of the HAMB to help me out. Has anyone ever made a kit of the pieces that would be required to convert a coupe or cabriolet into a roadster say in the case of a roll over? I know one would have to be a very good metal man in order to do it and i've seen the results of those who aren't. I would think some enterprising person would be able to do this in a production manner. I don't want to convert my 5W but was wondering....
The way to a 'roadster' from a Coupe or Cabrio is more involved than the removal and fairing of windshield posts. Coupes and Cabrios have different cowls, longer doors, shorter quarters, roll up windows... But in seeing some 4 door '49-'51 Mercs with the rear doors closed up and tops removed for Carson type tops, I can appreciate your question. ...I don't want to start pounding out some cowl-edge fairings and door tops, either... but now you've got me wondering! You may have lit a fire here...HAMB fire!
Usually the coupes that have undergone a modification like you are referring to are called coupsters,,I believe if you do a search you will fine several nicely done cars here on the Hamb. HRP
Roadsters have different cowls, doors, quarter panels, and catwalks. It's easier to just find a roadster. Trust me!
I don't think that the intent is to build a dimensionally correct roadster out of a coupe, but rather to make a more visually pleasing coupester than some of the ill-fated attempts that have been cobbled together. It's an interesting concept...hopefully better planned than those Rolls Royce grilles on VW's.
