I did a search with a few different wordings could not find much on vert shoe box 49-51 fords. Thinking of starting to look for a shoe box for my next project I am thinking a full time vert with a chopped windshield.i know there is 3 different styles anyone have some pics of verts or any done like this?Allso what model would look the best done this way I was thinking the buis coupe has the bigger pan before the trunk. Thanks Jake
Quote "Allso what model would look the best done this way I was thinking the buis coupe has the bigger pan before the trunk." So the way I read this it sounds like your thinking of taking the Top off a sedan. Is that correct? Also what 3 different styles are you talking about? The Wizzard
Yes I wan to take off the top and chop or shorten the front gl***. That is just it i am trying to learn a bit about them I have seen pics of what I thought was 3 different rear style side window/ back gl*** . Jake
I've only seen one that had had it's steel top cut off and made into a convert that looked totally right on the money and that was Stu McKenzie's Maroon one that he did about 23 years ago. It's a hard go to end with the header above the the windshield looking like anything but a hacked off coupe header.
Understand a Vert has a Frame totally different than a Sedan along with the floor pan. Coupe or Sedan doors do not look good with the tops taken off. Something to do with the Vent windows and rear door gl*** channel. Also the Quarter window don't come to the door gl*** with the B post removed. Doing a good job is not easy to pull off. That is if you want something that looks right even with the top down. Also the A post is totally different on a Vert. If you want a fair chance of doing a counterfit Vert start with a 51 Vicky. You'll still need to beef up the Frame. People will still say "You cut the top off a Sedan eh" The Wizzard
Here's a 1949 listed in the cl***ifieds. HRP http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=731834&highlight=1949+ford+convertible
To be honest I was thinking of no side windows at all full time rain catcher lol so welding up all the door side window openings. A custom shaved , frenched front lights rear lights ect. Air ride . So not really trying to make it look stock but would want it to look good. Jake
That car is way too nice for me to F up. There is one for sale local for 650 hard top 2 door.i was thinking about going to look at it. Jake
Well this incorrect info. "No" the header above the windshield is "NOT" the same as a Vert. "NO" the panel between the deck lid and back gl*** are NOT the same. "NO" They do not share the same Frame. "NO" They do NOT share the same floor pan. "YES" They share the same doors and Quarter windows. That's about all they share reguarding the main body shell The Wizzard
So we are talking boxing/more crossmembers for the frame making a frame in side the back quarters / deck of the car. Jake
Ford sedan frames are Square tube but Ladder style. Verts have a large X member. That's what keeps the doors working. But, if your going to weld the doors shut none of that would matter.
I wanted the doors to open but I guess welding them up would save a lot of time / work but would that cheese it up. Jake
Obviously not identical, bad choice of words, but hell of a closer than modifying a sedan or coupe...
So buy that rule guess it won't matter lol.I bet air rite cheeses it up allso so its doomed from the start.Lol Chopping the top would be great I sat in my uncles 51 chev chopped and felt way to closed in and always wanted a vert but knew it would be hard to find one. Thanks for all the info so far. Jake
A little far from your original topic, but a shot from 1956 I believe. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
What you're really asking for (permanent convertible) might be better described as "roadstered", but not a roadster. If you're heading this direction, and you've never owned a roadster before, STRONGLY consider building the car from the beginning with a Carson top. You don't have to finish the top, per se, but build it to fit the car while its under construction. Otherwise, you'll likely end up with a cool car that you only enjoy driving a few months out of the year. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
