I am gonna put a top on a car, a 50 chev, and I was wondering what is the best cheep elec or air or hand unit. I wont use it but a couple of times a year for other projects so a profesional grade is not needed. Any cool tips or info? Or will a regular stapler with the wide staples work? thanks

Air is best, much more powerful than hand operated, you will be pulling material with one hand and stapling with the other so you need all the power you can get.

air is the only way to go

  5. I bought a used pneumatic stapler on e-bay for like $50.
    Look for SENCO.

so do I need to use an actual gun for furniture and auto or will a narrow short staple style work?

I think you're better off with tacks, they have that long pointed tip that will curl under the tack strip and not pull out.

at least on the front bow.

If you go with an air stapler, be careful with the adjustment of air pressure... too much and it will slam the staples straight through the fabric... its gotta be set just right to drive the staple in the whole way without going so far as to shoot straight through. You'll want a stapler that can use 1/2" staples. Harbor Frieght has one for about 40 bucks, although i won't say that's the best one you can buy... For one job it should do the trick though.
