I recently bought a real nice all steel 34 Ford coupe that has a rumble lid. I want to convert it to a trunk. Looking for advice from someone who has done it or maybe just knows what is involved, Does anyone make 34 coupe trunk hinges? I am assuming I can use the same rear trunk lid and the original handle. I will need to find a latch mechanism and wondering how I fill the hole where the rumble handle is now. I will have a nice seat for sale and the rumble hinges IF I can figure out how to do this swap. Thanks for any advice. Corndog __________
As long as you have the brackets for the hinges under the rear window area, it should be pretty straightforward. The hinges are STUPID expensive so prepare yourself. This dude has aluminum '35, '36 hinges which are not supposed to work for '33, '34, but in my experience they are interchangeable. (your mileage may vary) linechaser32 | The H.A.M.B. -Abone.
Thanks for the Help. I already experienced the price for hinges. I called the Old Ford store in Ca and they told me they were $500!
You will also need the lower inner panel which was I believe reproduced. The catch for the hook (different than on the rumble)on the latch attaches to this panel also. The rain gutter sides need to be extended to meet that panel . I have done this twice but on a 35 roadster and 36 5W. To fill the hole,I made a flat plug disc and welded it in.The latch should (not sure if identical to trunk latch)just relocate to the other end and drill the holes and slot for latch hook.to secure it.Fit the latch first before you puncture the hole for the handle. When you drill the hole for the handle don't forget the square notch for the locking pawl .It needs to be clocked correctly (I think on the left )so the handle points up when locked.
That's a kick ass 5/W! Hope you're keeping those wheels on it. Welcome to the "deep pocket" world of 33/34 Fords. Bob Drake made repro hinges that were about $350, but are out of production. Coupe trunk latch is different than rumble. You'll also need a trunk lid support arm which is repopped. You'll also need a good Nutsert tool for your new trunk hinge deck lid holes. Years ago, guys with growing families were converting trunk lids to rumble lids so they could still take the coupe/rdstr to cruise night, but it now seems to be the other way around. You can recoup some of your deck lid hinge outlay by selling your rumble parts (seats, hinges, latch, various brackets, bumpers, etc). Just maybe the converting buyer will have trunk lid hinges available to make a trade. https://cwmoss.com/collections/deck...dEM0dgQ3LX7p2spr8CwwkfdNJrtpvUEEZkNzPK246CM7C
