Hope you guys can help me out again. I just bought a working 5MF AM radio for my '55 Country Sedan. The PO converted the car to 12 volts. Can you tell me how I can convert my radio from 6 to 12 volts? Thanks Bruce
You don't want to convert the radio to 12, you want to convert the 12v to 6v to power just the radio. Some one here said NAPA has a gadget to do this. You also have to be careful with the polarity. The old 6 volt stuff is positive ch***is ground and your 12 v system is negative ground. So you my have to isolate the radio ch***i from the cars ch***is. You may want to get an electronics guys to help because if you hook up the polarity backwards it could fry your new (old) radio.
Thanks for your help. I tried to look up the part on the NAPA website but couldn't find anything. Perhaps someone could chime in with a part number or description. If someone knows how to do this, can you let me know. BTW I'm a visual learner Bruce
Here's a link to a pricy voltage reducer. http://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail/6757/Voltage_Reducer_12v_To_6v_For_Heater_Radio_Gauges.html BTW the radio should not be polarity sensitive and should work fine on negative ground.
I think what you are talking about was mentioned in this post: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...discussionid=18650&gmid=334029#gmessage334029
Macs Auto Parts sell a reducer which will suit you. Voltage Reducer - Max Load 6 Amps Year: 1949-1955 Part #: V12874 $28.95 Regards
Hey Twin, I believe your looking for an instrument regulator Napa number IR1 that's for the gauges. Should be around 45.00. I don't believe it will work for your radio though.
