I need to convert my 1931 2 Dr sedan to hydrolic brakes, and 5 bolt lugs. what parts do I need to use my stock 31 spindles?

As I remember, the "traditional" way to do it was to use the Model "A" spindles, later ('40's) backing plates and Model "A" piston rings as spacers to center the backing plates on the spindles and welding up and re drilling the mounting holes to the Model "A" size. Then there used to be a commercially available spacer to position either the Model "A" or later drum (sorry, I don't remember which so you're on your own here) on the spindle. Some people say you can use a flathead (or Model "A" or whatever) valve seat as the spacer.

Another way is to get some '37-'48 (or equivalent aftermarket) spindles and the whole stock Lockheed setup and run with that. In the same vein, you could purchase the complete Boling Brothers Bendix setup. (Or Speedway.)

Or, since you didn't specify drum brakes, there is a myriad of aftermarket disk brake setups you could use.

    Take your pick.

If it was me for drums in the front Id be buying bendix style brakes off @RICH B and start there. You can check out his ads in the parts classifieds. He is a very helpful guy. Speedway sells the spacer rings you need.

For the rear will depend on what your plan is for the rear end???

  4. Ron, You should add your general location to your profile. You can never tell how and when it will pay off.

F1 or F100 work pretty well , if you want self energizing stuff

  6. Unless your stock front end has been recently restored; one thing to consider would be a change either '37-'41 or '42-'48 spindles while you doing the brakes. The later spindles have a better arrangement where car rides on thrust bearing instead of hanging on it (and frequently set-up incorrectly). The later tie rod ends stay tighter and smoother longer then the ball/socket A ends. You would also need an aftermarket steering arm and a "hybrid" drag link.

To add further to the advice above if you can hunt up a later axle 32-36 I think and spindles it will also lower your model A a little.
