Hot Rods Cool little find

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by prewarcars4me, May 27, 2015.

  1. A buddy of mine likes going to the farm type auctions, so do I but no time lately. Anyway, he calls me up and says I have an old SCTA timing tag, $30 if you want it. Tells me its from 1941.

HELLZ YA, I want it. I see them selling for much more online, but I bought it to just have a bit of history.

Cool find! Now see if you can find a picture of the car or of George Preston.

  4. I spent a few hours the other day (when he called me up to ask if I wanted it). Couldnt find anything on his name. I had him ask the guy at the auction and he had no info on the car or the man. Would love to know.

Use the net- you can find ANYTHING. A couple of years ago a guy posted pictures of some drag racing trophies from Sanford Maine he bought at an antique store. He was looking for background info and asked for help. I am friends with one of the founders of organized drag racing in New England, Jere Sheehan, and called him. He saved EVERYTHING from 1952 on, and called me back saying he had found an issue of "Drag News" with all the class winners for the date given. ( car in pic- courtesy "Cool Cars, Square Roll Bars") It was fun digging around, and cool that the guy wanted to keep the trophies with some history. That tag is a piece of history; thanks for rescuing it!

  10. I'll hit him up and see if he knows or might have any leads. Would be cool to find a picture of the guy and his car. Thanks.

The tag is an awesome find, hopefully you can find the car or owners picture.

Way off topic, but why the Aqua cd case as the backdrop? Haha

Where was the farm auction at? When I lived in Colorado I bought a bunch of cool stuff at those farm auctions.

  13. Not sure which is scarier, me having it, or you being able to recognize it with whats shown ;) Wife was packing up a box of old CDs, and I just put it on the stack.

Auction was in either Kingman or Golden Valley, AZ.

  14. You need to build a car to go with it. LOL

    neat find.

Judging by the stamp used, that's a really early 1941 tag too... By later in '41, the SCTA was using blockier letters on a round wheel.

  20. Good info to know. Thx.

If he is a Road Runner, they have an excellant web site with a bunch of club history on the members. Should be able to google it. Also you can check with the Hot Rod Foundation, they have a bunch of stuff on SCTA and land speed.

Muroc would be a 1/4 mile timed at speed, not a standing start.

Thanks for clearing that up. No way those numbers work without the car being A LOT faster and shutting down early.

Why do you think he's looking for history and pics?

  27. I was wondering if Mr Preston was in one of the founding clubs or a founding member because from what Ive found the SCTA was only 4 years old at the time.

To the guy with the windshield, I was out of town, and not online to get your PMs. I already have a few guys wanting it first, sorry.

  28. I do appreciate all of your suggestions on where to look to find info. THANK YOU.

Once I have a free afternoon, I'll be using all your suggestions to look.
