I'm having the same problem, my thumbdrive plays in my daily driver but won't play in my little radio. I also loaded a sd card and it won't play either. I can find FM stations by using the remote. I am also technologically challenged.

Put all MP3 files in the root directory of the thumb drive.

Radio just lets you scan for next station and if antenna is not good, no stations will be found.

I read this cool thread and then did a search for compact car radios looking for a compact arrangement with good radio tuner. I am adept at circuitry but have no patience for station searches. The discovery is that there are gauge sized marine radios & found there are many sources. This may be of interest to some and is not an expensive option. One of these could go behind the speaker grill and make a dummy radio face that is easy in a 40 Ford. The car will look stock and yet have access to am/fm radio stations, bluetooth, usb etc and have all the features of a full radio in a 3 inch hole. The one downside is that some remotes are almost the same price as a radio.
I was looking at using a basic midfifties chevy truck radio & make new knobs & a faceplate cover to give it a 40's look. The gauge size radio will conceal well & give access to the radio or or play through bluetooth.

Buy a bluetooth speaker, throw it on the floor, and run audio off your phone. Panda, etc.
You can also take it with you outside the car.
Personally, I prefer to listen to the car, but this works great
