so he would be using a flash disconnected from the camera like a nikon sb600 with a gel over it and pop it in what ever direction for the interior shots?! how is is controled ouside like the t-bird grill? is there some blinders maybe so it dosent bleeds out to the sides? and the headlights.. is the flashlight just directed into the headlights from a distance and their reflectors create the effect?? very cool stuff!!

my buddy Boyd with a '57 210 drag racer he built circa 1985. it had a '65 327 in it. Boyd yanked the fender emblems off the '65 and put 'em on the '57. this pic was taken in the same part of his yard as the '82 '55 pic.

This is how the coupe in my avatar looked when dad first built it. It's been through a few changes since then. . .

Yes, the flash is disconnected from the camera and can be flashed independently of the camera/shutter -many and multiple times.

    In a '1 2 3'...' process

First a person would flash the total front of the car/grille with what ever color gel over the flash to illuminate and bring out the detail of 'all'.

The interior and background flash(es) can be done at anytime.

The headlights and any "high lighted" areas are "worked" with a flash light over a short period of time. If you have 4 headlights you would work each light for a few seconds keeping in mind that the total time/camera/exposure is just ~5 or 10 minutes.

Accuracy with your flashlight is key if you don't want to 'over expose' or bleed light onto erroneous parts of the grille and such.

"Lost America" started posting strobed/flashed images about 5 years ago on the net. His first subjects were faces etc but moved quickly onto abandoned gas stations on the old route 66
    -then into old aircraft.....

Eventually he worked his way into a few auto wrecking yards where he started photographing cars.

The concept of illuminating or gel flashing is a recent idea that has only garnered ground with the advent of digital cameras (huge storage/lots of play ground room) with good image quality.
Hence the popularity of cameras like the Nikon D90 which can be finagled into opening it's electronic shutter for long periods of time while still producing high definition low light images.
Sure wish I could afford cool toys like that.

Thanks for the more detailed reply!!! I have a d-90 and will try something similar. I've just started playing a bit with HDR and maybe this is something I can mix in....time will tell!
