This is our small family church out in the middle of nowhere. My Great-great-grandparents & families on my mom's side built it in 1884. I thought I'd take a cruise out there in the Essex today and snap some pics...it's about 40 miles from our place.

This is in SoCal (Anza Borrego Desert State Park)

Me 32 years ago. A friend, native to the area, told me about a hermit's cave at the base of the mountains. I had a mean Baja Bug and drove it as far as possible. (trail now closed) After parking, it was a difficult hour long hike. The place is still there and still the same, I check on it once in a while. I doubt more than a 1/2 dozen people have seen it in the last 50 years.

Old Tom (the hermit) had been gone for about 20 years when the photo was taken but the 2 room cave looked like he had left a few days before.

There's many personal items, jars for water, 1930's National Geoghraphic magazines stacked in the corner and the grass hay bed with blankets and a pillow was still made.

He had a rainwater catchment system and a 20 gallon oil drum stove. (you can see the vent pipe behind me) It has the coolest front door I've ever seen and the window still works.

 

I don't see nuttin'.
