Craig Breedlove behind the wheel of that Daytona. Looks like Bonneville when they were doing record runs.

You're right! Long story short they were using up time on the salt so Arfon/Firestone couldn't run to reset a record.

This weekend photo from northern Maine. Looks like a Texaco pump and Exxon sign?

See attached photo of Kee Bird today....the front and rear fuselage are burned off.

That would be Doc, it's in Witchita KS. It's a way's off from flying, needs lots of $$$. Not associated w/ Collins or Yankee. I think it's mainly a group of Boeing retirees / volunteers that got together to try and ger her in the air.

The CAF B-29 Fifi, was flown out of China Lake in 1971.
Another was flown out of China Lake in 1979 and is now in a museum in Duxford, England.
The Enola Gay was never at China Lake, the NASM had it in storage from 1965 - 2002 in Silver Hill Maryland. It's now fully restored and on display at the Dulles annex to the NASM.
The one that went to Inyokern is called Doc, now in Wichita.
Several other B-29's were taken out of China Lake and sent to various military base museums. Only Fifi and Doc are in private hands.
....and when the B-29's were discovered at Naval Air Station China Lake (they were used as targets), the Navy insisted that no WWII planes were on the base. IIRC, there were 7 or 8 still in one piece.

Some others have answered...this is Ki Bird, went down in Greenland, Darryl Greenamayer, the Smirnoff dragster guy and race pilot, tried to bring it back, replaced engines, propellers, bulldozed a runway, and fired it up to fly it out. Sadly the alternate power generator caught fire and Greenamayer and crew realized that they forgot one thing, a fire extinguisher. Give him a lot of credit for trying to save a rare B-29...there are almost none left flying...took my daughter to sit in and listen to Fifi fire up the engines some years ago, still makes my neck hairs stand up.

Ralfs56 - You are jogging my memory a bit. I don't know about the one in '71 since I reported to China Lake in '72. I do remember one flying out in '79 now that you mention it, that was right after I went civil service for the Range Department. One of the guys I worked with was on a tracking mount taking video of it as it rolled down the runway. But I do remember one flying out in '76, I was working for the local cable company that year and was on a pole doing an install when it flew south over the center of town. When I was stationed there in '72 I was at the Ground Electronics Building which was just up the road from the "graveyard". I used to drive past it every day. We were told the Enola Gay (or parts of) was in that pile.
