The problem may not...be because of the o-ring.

I recently bought a car that had one of those. There was no location Machined cutout) for a thermostat to sit properly. I tried installing one, no matter what I did, the damn thing leaked.
I bought a $!0 OEM style housing...no more leak. AND...the water temp., was more properly controlled with the thermostat in place.

RTV alone between 2 metal surfaces isn't great at coolant sealing due to it hardening and with temp plus pressures involved. With a gasket will work better.
An O-ring shouldn't need anything except a bit of lube to allow smooth seating or it's not designed properly.
You can try other sealers that don't fully harden, but check fitment as @Mike VV mentioned.
I will mention that between all the different necks and hoses, you should be able to find a solid one unless this is a very special case. It may require a fabricated one.

Check and make sure it’s machined properly, nice and flat

I'm thinking that those had a reputation for leaking or other issues since they showed up years ago. Great idea that would solve some problems if it worked perfect.

  6. Assuming this is the same 40 Chev. truck of the last two threads- since you need to install a shroud anyway, I would do away with that swivel, go to a straight neck outlet with a gasket, and use a different upper radiator hose. If the swivel is being used because of interference with accessories, maybe a different outlet?

A SBC intake manifold has the relief machined for the thermostat , IIRC some others have the relief in the thermostat housing .
I've had this type of housing in use for 20+ years , has been on & off many times . Have never had a problem.

I've had mixed results with that type of housing and if I had a choice I wouldn't use them, but...sometimes the application demands a different solution than is available as "stock":( I've filed the manifold to insure a flat surface and on my last engine I used RTV to "lock" the thermostat down because there was too much sloop between the manifold and the housing.

Use a good quality chrome housing like a Mr Gasket from NAPA with the O ring seal only. Do not add any RTV or sealant. Make sure your mounting bolts are not too long, (some are threaded blind holes in manifold). Ask me how I know !
