merlins do sound amazing, being from hamilton i get to hear one of the last avro lancasters (4 merlins) fly on a regular basis. Nothing quite sounds the same, i seen/heard it a thousand times and everytime i hear it, it makes your head snap towards the sky.

They all sound good to me, but I'll give a plug for the lowly chrysler flathead six... it has a sound all it's own, and all is right in the world when I turn the key.

Dang man, a healthy 302 Ford with four webers.

Idling or pulling hard through the gears and through the whole RPM range! The little 302 sounds better than some old Ferrari!

I'll see your 302 and raise you a 427... Dry sump...

Again with webers or injection... Winding out on a road course.

An old Chevy 216 or 235 with Fenton headers and duals with glasspacks! Not the fastest, but in my opinion you can't beat that old 'bomba' sound. I like how my 327 sounds too...

Coolest motor I have ever heard in person is the "Quincy Looper" racing outboard motor. The one in the pic is a 4 cyl. motor based on a Mercury 2cycle outboard block. They also made 2 and 6 cyl. versions. With the 4 open megaphones at 7000rpm they can be heard for miles. Just plain sweet!

Kill me for adding this one, but take a 5.0 Mustang with a big cam, higher compression, maybe stroked, long tube headers, an X-pipe, and Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a 5.0 yet, but they really get my blood pumping!

I also love a bunch that have been mentioned already - Nitro burning, huge cam, huge compression is where it's at.

Doug, I agree the Novi is a sound I will never forget. It is right up there as one of my favorites. The noise and rumble is extremely distinctive. I recently went to the Miller Meet and the day long sounds of some of the greatest racing engines is surely a treat for any car nut. One of the best sounding engines though was one of the WWI 1650 cubic inch Liberty air craft engines in a boat that was really hauling on Lake Tahoe back in the eighties. This guy kept his foot into it and it created some real thunder. Jim

  28. My votes are Miller (Offy) 91, Ardun, Ford DFV and Jaguar 3.8 or 4.2. Damn, and pretty much any Ferrari engine, but his 4 bangers are really amazing.

For a street mill though... Flathead, or 327 (if you are running an 8), riley headed model B 4 banger, and the Chevy inline 6. But there are just too many to choose from.

The 409 I used to have in my 62 impala. It was bored 60 and stroked 1/8". 12:1 compression, solid cam, dual quads, try-y headers leading into 2-1/2" core glass packs with 3" pipes dumping right in front of the rear wheels.......Damned what memories, I'm glad to still be alive!

  30. I dunno what they dubbed in but McQueen,s Bullitt mustang has got an awesome growl.A whining blower on anything is pretty kool as well!
