Nobody has mentioned any diesel trucks yet! No I don't mean a new Dodge Ram, but how about a '50's era Cummins NHRS series - they had gear driven Roots blowers, special cams, and most often straight pipes. With a whole lot of cylinder pressure, and no turbo to soften the exhaust note-oh Lordy!! There's a few still runnin around-ya gotta hear one to appreciate it! Let's not forget the GM 2-strokes either- especially the V12 truck motors- back in the day, guys used to hop em up with bigger injectors, and modified governors for more RPM. As a trucker's kid, those "screamin Jimmys" made a hell of an impression on me back in the mid-70s. I'll still roll the window down when I get next to one in traffic (rarely, these days.) Pete
Yeah, ok. You win. I really miss BTCC (if that's even still what it's called) since I moved to US I haven't seen a race...
I've never tried a You tube link before so it might not work. It's not trad or old... but gives me shivers.... supposedly a C5-R 427 on the dyno... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUK3aMoJgoc One more... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2vqzJ6EcTM
Well, being considered a "senior citizen" (born in 1941) I'll never forget the beautiful sound of g'49-'53 Olds/Caddy or even the flathead fords and mercs with dual pipes and, .........PORTER MUFFLERS!!!!! Next in line would have to be the Chevy/GMC six cylinder with a nice set of fenton headers and Smittys!!!! WOW!!! My '50 Olds fastback, stickshift is getting a nice exhoust system installed now with 27 inch Smittys! Should sound nice!!! Wolfie
An old 2 Cly john Deere model b idling. you wonder how it stays going or a Cummings diesel pulling a 10 second pass at the drag strip
I cant pick a favorite but, here a few. Early carbureted small journal low c.i. SBC exhaling through ramhorns. 260-351 Small block fords. Y blocks, unmuffled flathead V8's, Just to name a few.Whatever it is, its gotta have a manual trans I just love that sound beetween shifts. But to me anything that sounds like a mid 60's SCCA trans-am road racer gives me goose bumps, the sound is so unearthly to me at idle or full throttle! Check out these videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOEKorGhpwU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkozQCsQIKI
I just have a few as I'm getting ready to turn in. Top Fuel anything B-17 radial engines, preferably in squadron formation Lamborghini V-12 any current F1 car F1 Ducati (Desmocedici)
Some 2 cycle engines give me goose bumps, but I don't have the room for 16V645 under my hood. Maybe a J47 with the water on, or a TF39 @ 110%, or maybe this engine? I like the way it idles. Just a Silver 16V92 with a couple extra turbos. Standard in your common 50 ton haul trucks http://tinyurl.com/22xg5d
My big block Cad 472 bored and stroked to 518, through two 22 inch glass packs and butterflied back through lakes pipes, NO SOUND LIKE IT! it's awesome. Rags
Top fuel harley motors.....Any formula car engine past and present. My 12:1 big block with 286 degree .585 lift cam at idle through 2 3/8" zoomies on E85...not much like it. Kinda smells like a dry martini...that makes your eyes burn.
"Pinning the Dyno, 2000 hp. .... A 7 second 1/4 mile car. At about :30 they gun it. Amazing sound.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iml3iBMtfBQ This is Lars from the MSN Flathead Forum. He built a roadster using this V12 Meteor Engine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJuS0jR6_E4 . But my actual vote would be for a mild Flathead... . . .
Solid lifter short stroke mopar (273/318/340) with a ugly solid camshaft, lots o' compression, and open headers. Gotta have heavily ported X heads. Then run it through the gears hard, with 8k shifts. The little 344ci mopar I had in my dart spun the chassis dyno to over 400hp and made all the right sounds. It was also the loudest motor I have ever heard with open headers.
1. Indian Scout running through the gears. 2. Honda CB 750 with Kerker or RC 4-1 header. Nothing like new crotch rockets, a real different and mellow sound. 3. Another Y block vote. 4. Big block Cad. 5. Any V-8 too radical for good street use. 6. WWII radial aircraft engines. 7. British sports cars. 8. Years ago at the McClouth KS threshing bee there was a HUGE old tractor, it might have been a Rumley, don't remember. The wheels must have been near 8 feet tall. It would go off every 20 or 30 seconds. There wasn't much noise, but the large amount of exhaust expelled would make my eardrums hurt a bit if I was within 2 feet of it.
The engine that sounds the coolest to me is a 2cyl John Deere, not a rod engine but i love the sound of 'em, then my 223 ford six with a split header that sounds like an old proppeller plane.
Here's the 365 HP 327 in my '53 Stude...T10 close ratio 4 speed. 4.27 posi. Eatin' a ricer for lunch at Osceola, Indiana a couple of weeks ago. http://my.videoegg.com/video/dzpQeB
Flathead Fords and the 572 Contintental engine that was used in Brockway trucks. mmmmmmmmmmm...... http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZNPEgkX1Xm0 check that 1946 Brockway out! Jordan
For sound, nothing beats a flathead ... But besides that, all I've driven is my F-100's 223 six ... stock 1bbl ... with steelpack, glasspack, and my personal favorite, a real short open pipe. I'm dropping a Y-block into it this week ... I'll be sure to let you guys know how I like it.
one of our customers has a 72 kw k series with an 8V-71 detroit in it. sounds like its running 10,000 rpm at 1,000. the mechanical tach squeaks and everything around is shaking and carrying on, its nuts. the fuel shut off solenoid doesnt work anymore so to kill it you have to grab high gear, stick the maxis on and just give it enough clutch to stall it. the thing bites in hard and puts up a hell of a fight and sounds like nothing else ive ever heard
