  1. Went to the local u-pull-it last weekend. There was a '51 Hudson. Got the Twin-H intake and the also the super power dome head. I just love that place.

Maybe a bit off topic. But, this is the oddest thing I ever found in a salvage yard. Back in 1958 I went to Goldie's in Quincy, Massachusetts. This was a HUGE yard foreign and domestic. I wanted seats from a Healy or TR-3. I found a pair in a recently totally destroyed Triumph. I unbolted the left seat and as I lifted it out I found a foot!! A SEVERED FOOT!! Shoe and all. Kinda grossed me out...I was 16 at the time. I went to the office and told Goldie and he response was....
    "That's another five dollars"!!
I got seats from a Healy 100-4 instead.

  9. Cool thread, so here's mine....not very HAMB worthy....but still rare.
A 1977 cutlass factory 5-speed car with 31,000 miles. Not cared for at all but with a new fuel pump out of another car in the lot9just swapped them, didn't ask the yard) it fired up and drove out under its own power. A week later and a set of new tired it made a trip from north eastern washingtion down to Phoenix Az with not issues at all.

My favorite all time find was this '64 dodge D100 CSS truck (custom sport special). It was sunk in the mud up to the axles, on a set of A-body 15inch ralley wheel. Got the truck for $250 and sold the wheels for $300, had it towed out of the yard to a discount tire for the new wheels and tires. While I was waiting to get it in, walked next door to a Checker auto parts, bought a battery, some marvels magic mystery oil, a fuel pump and some starting fluid, picked up 3 gal of gas and the damned thing fired up like it had been parked the week before. Loved that truck, but sold it to buy a house.

  12. John Downey gave me a guided tour of his salvage yard waaay back in 1961 or '62.
John asked me if I wanted to see his low tech security system.
"Sure John, bring it on" I responded.
John turns to his right and hollers as loud as a fog horn. "HERE GOOSE!"
Sure enough a grossly overweight goose ,standing about 5 feet tall , waddled from around the corner, walks up to us and pressed his beak into my face.
    Scary frickin bird!

  15. My wife.:)
went to a junkyard trying to find a part for my 49 pontiac. while standing at the counter, I glanced out into the yard at an old 57 chevy convertible sitting on blocks. out from under the back popped some beautiful legs with white go-go boots.
I didn't know at that moment, I was looking at my future wife.

A 60's AFX Aurora AMX HO scale slot car with great Patina under the seat of a 68 International Pickup. Still one of my favorite cars :) It's hard to make artificial patina on plastic ...

nothing vintage, rare, or even as cool as some of the stuff in this thread,
nearly new 35" BFG mud terrain, mounted on a ford aluminum truck
wheel covered by floor mats, stashed under a van $15,
    scrapped the wheel for $8

FS bronco tailgate (complete) and an extra glass i found under the
bronco i got the tailgate from $60

set of 4 15x8 cragar SST wheels, rescued before they hit the scrap
    yard *Freebie*

set of 4.10 geared dana 30/35 axles, steering linkage, and front
springs rescued before they hit scrap yard $75

most of the real junkyards are run by crabby old bastids, no access to the yards at all. u-pull-it yards are about the only place to find anything, and nothing really cool is in them

Back when I was a teen in Ky. , I went to a junk yard in Louisville, I think it was called Cook's. There half way back under a tree sat a bone stock 40 Willys coupe, with the original front end. I ask how much it was and he said $50.00. It took me 5 weeks to get the money together, and when I went back to get it, he said it sold last week. Did score a Hurst 4 speed for $10.00 though.

about 3 years ago was parting out a 78 amc concord AMX and found a wallet under the rear seat with $3, drivers license and etc. oh and a big old pack of rolling papers!!!! no pot just papers(bummer)guess thats why he only had $3 left. I boxed it up complete and shipped it to the address on the license but never heard back from the guy.

some friends and i found an old junk yard in the woods a few years ago. we found out that it was a junk yard in the 50's that closed down. it had a No Tresspassing sign but we just went in for a look. piles of parts, motors, and cars. among the cool finds was: Red Ram Hemi upside down in a stack of motors, a stripped and rolled 50 merc(this thing was mangled and tossed on top of a stack of parts). one of the coolest things was in a rooten barn on the outskirts of the yard. it was caged mini cooper that i believe was a vintage road racer. it didn't have motor, trans, or suspension. it was so lite that one person could lift the front of the car.

  25. Believe it or not, my 49 came from a junkyard near Richmond VA about 8 or 9 years ago. Just getting around to putting the cab and (sectioned) flatbed onto a 95 Dakota chassis.

The USED PARTS sign came from a salvage yard right here in Newport News last summer after they sold off all of the cars & parts getting ready to close. This sign was jammed down behind a shelving unit that was now bare.

The dealership logos were on the inside of the back doors of a little bread truck that (I learned later) belonged to an upholstery guy who used to take care of small rips & tears on brand new cars at all of the local new car dealerships. He worked out of the truck and got the dealership logos as a souvenir. Fortunately it was one of the Saturdays that I remembered to bring my DeWalt cordless drill to remove the 70 or so rivets that held the aluminum panels to the back doors.

The lubester and the 56 Ford Sunliner convertible parts came from the same yard as my 49. The Ford was so incredibly rusted that these were the only things that I could remove from the rusted hulk

Slightly OT, but the Bluesmobile was in a junkyard in Virginia Beach last October!

Somebody had a good find of my fancy Craftsman ratchet. The zipper on my backpack split open and dumped it in the snow. And they stopped making that kind.

And a few years later I left the cheap replacement on a fender.

I found many vise grips over the years. And once I saw bags of groceries in the trunk, with the change in one of the bags, about 5 bucks worth.
Still waiting to find that huge roll of drug money.
