I read the big, long tech archive about doing the 350/350 swap in a 49-54 Chevy, and it answered most of my questions. It said the original radiator worked just fine but I'm wondering, what about the trans? do I need to run a trans cooler? or can they re-core the original radiator and add one to it somehow??

get an auxillary trans cooler and mount it up front. way more efficient, since you are cooling with cool air rather than a hot radiator

  3. Yup, I have a TH400 behind a 350 in my 54 and never had issues with a small aftermarket cooler.

Definately a trans cooler especially with a shift kit or a stall convert....I never did grasp the concept of putting hot trans fluid next to hot rad fluid...Using a cooler will help knock the heat down on both trans and engine....win win situation...

  6. Same with me too. 50 chevy, 350/350 stock radiator with an add on trans cooler that I mounted in front of the radiator a few inches.

I have a 350/350 combo in the 49, stays cool until I sit in traffic. But I have a non clutch fan and no shroud. Has anybody found a good shroud that will work? Does the stock one fit alright with this combo?

Not sure about what shroud will fit but a fan that I found works really well with no shroud is a plastic flex-a-lite....If memory serves me correct it was a 6 blade....In the early 90's I ran one of these on a 69 Ply Valiant with a dual qaud 440 and a 78 dodge aspen radiator.....the car never got above 175 ideling, traffic, didnt matter......The fans are light and pull gobs of air, one drawback is if they are used with a shroud that they make alot of noise, without a shroud they are fine...

Yeah, the fan I have on there pulls plenty of air, but a shroud always makes a huge difference.

I Have A 350 Trans With Cooler Mounted Under The Car,
But In Some Air. Have An A/c So That Takes Up Most Of The Room In Front Of The Radiator.use An Electric Sucker Fan.

  11. ....I always mount a trans cooler under the car on the frame rail next to the trans instead of in front of the radiator. Lot less lines involved and have never had a problem with any of em. ...just my 2 cents.
