I need some cooling advice advice. I recently got a truck and I'm having cooling issues. Here's the rundown 57 Chevy truck cab with a flatbed (some weight) No overdrive, High gear rear end (lots of RPM's not a lot of air) Aluminum Radiator - 21" wide, 26" deep Big Block Chevy Turbo 400 Dually rear end When I got it it did not have a fan shroud - it does now, but still is running warmer than it should. The heater core is byp***ed presently. The motor does not have a clutch fan. There is no A/C at this time (would like to run it later though). Fan is appx 5" away from the radiator. Question is - do I change to a clutch and more aggressive fan, or put an electric fan in it's place and ditch the engine fan altogether? I would prefer not to use a pusher fan, as it would look just plain ugly. What does your experience say? Bruce
The clutch fan won't help with the overall temp. A more agressive pitch fan may help. Where are the fan blades in relation to the shroud? 5" sounds pretty far away for a typical shroud... Don't pull the thermostat. That will drop the water temp but RAISE the actual temperature of the engine metal parts. How thick is the radiator core? What is the timing set at (total timing, not initial)?
