coming from you Kevin, that is quite a compliment. And for all the rest of you, Kevin sold me this car a year ago as a pretty rough roller, but...it was, and still is...ALL STEEL! thank you Kevin
Got to love those long Wisconsin winters, I think that orange Olds looks familiar to me, I grew up in Whitewater and cruised Janesville. The Corn fed Elephant is appropriate name.........that car is awesome..
The Olds spent much of its life in sunny California and then was owned by a man from Sycamore, IL. I doubt it roamed the Whitewater/Janesville area
............and remember that car came from the second owner who bought it from a woman in Burlington Vermont . He took it home to make a Gasser out of it in 1963 and when the Ford dealer screwed him on a SOHC motor he lost interest .
Kevin, if you told me this, I forgot. That is very interesting. Here is an interesting question for you...we have a hunch it was right hand drive at some time (these cars are like bisexuals, they can go both ways) , do you have any knowledge of that?
we are just about ready to rock. Other than some details and electrical, the car is ready to drive. We will need to shoot it with some satin clear to seal it up. Another seven to ten days and it will be completely done. Tomorrow morning, we load up and head for Back to the 50's. The Olds and the Willys will roll together, in commemoration of the movie Hot Rod. Sorry, no pics tonight, but will put some up early next week.
You made my weekend with that wicked ride in the Willys. Here are some of the pics I took. The kids and I both love the cars. A prewar Willys rides up like a cutter through ice!
What a great shot! It's like i'm watching the movie in still photography .... Look's GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks for the great shots, Paul. I really enjoyed your family. Those two boys are going to be trouble. Seems like they are "Hot Rod" junkies already.

HOE-LEE-SHIT! That thing sounds WILD!!!!!! I SURE do hope there's a video made of you running that thing when it's all dialed in... NICE!
actually, it is MUCH more dramatic and overwhelming in person. Thanks for posting up the video, Paul. I hope we can make a side-by-side pass down the track soon. That cute little Topo and that big bad Willys might be a good match
WHAT DID YOU SAY? I think my ears still hurt a little from that ride. It is was better in person. I need a new camera with better sound. Turn the sound all the way up on your computer and listen again. It gets a little better.
Love how the camera goes all out of shape when you "clean it out" a little. Did you have anyone following you around thinking you were leaking "Shine" due to your exhaust emissions?
I know a LOT of guy's on here have seen the movie..but i got to thinking, how many people have approached you knowing what you modeled your build after? So many time's i've mentioned that movie and the Willys, and folks look at me like i'm from Mars.......last time i checked, i wasn't... Again, VERY well done! I Love the movie car even if it was a*****box...Your's being far from that but still having the look, may be my new Favorite Willys! Tony
The car sounds absolutely ridiculous in person. I was setting up my tent in the camp grounds off Como Ave. on Thursday when you took her for a rip. I was telling all my buddies standing there that I hoped you got on it . . . and just then you gave her a good romp. Absolute music I tell you!
there were three of us that took turns hanging around the Willys/Olds and listening/visiting with the onlookers. You can't even imagine the stories we heard. It would take hours to share all, but I will share a few: one fellow stated the he had driven 200 miles just to see the Willys after reading this thread on the HAMB. Another asked me about the Olds being in a magazine some twenty years ago. He thought it was in "Hot Rod Magazine", but I corrected him that it was in "Streetrodder" 1/75. He looked at the car for a moment and then stated that in the magazine, the Olds had velocity stacks through the hood. Yes indeed. I had a copy of the magazine and he looked it over for ten minutes. What a memory! My buddy, and the builder of the car, said a group of three guys came along and started spewing movie lines to each other and they went on for five minutes. My buddy Jim was on duty when a guy came along in an old Moon tee-shirt with a jacket slung over his shoulder, just like the star in the movie "Hot Rod". Jim jokenly asked him where his saxaphone was and the man looked him straight in the eye and said "I left it at home" WOW!! We did have a guy announce to his buddy that for $99,000 there had better be three others just like it My favorite is when Paul "InlawmodelA" and his family showed up and he and his young boys were quoting movie lines. It seems there are some real groupies out there. Steve and Jim thought I was nuts for investing in such a folly, but they are now groupies themselves. Next up, a trip down the strip
That's great! I would have loved to be there and listen to all the talk as well. The comment from the guy with the Moon shirt was good! It's pretty cool to hear so many people know that movie..Considering it was far from high end back then... I for one and glad you did what you did with that car. As you may remember that is one car i would love to build a tribute car to as well.... And someone better get video of you running that at the track!! Tony
How about at Brainerd International Raceway August 28-30 for the MSRA SS/FR? If you're a member of the MSRA its a great free weekend of racing, camping and fun!
