John Reidenbach's 62 that now runs in the 8s. John did a great thread on here with the build of this car from a near worthless carcass. Car is fun to watch.
John's HAMB handle is Bald1-great build thread IMO. Thread is "62 Corvette Gasser project barn find".
@Chris Corwel, Congratulations, That is a very cool car. I would like to see some more pictures of it.
Most of these cars aren’t gassers. They are Modified Sports. I think you may have been able to run a Modified Sports as a gasser they as two different NHRA classes.
Robert you may have a point but gassers has become a catchall it seems for cars with a raised stance (and a few other trends that may raise eyebrows). The NHRA tweaked the rulebook every year to some extent but if you were to look at the 67 rulebook they had a street section that included Gas, street roadsters and modified sports. Some tracks may have allowed some crossover for Corvettes to run in gas but I have not run into it. If there was a distinction it may have been that gas only allowed a 10% engine setback and modified sports allowed up to 25%. When 1968 rolled around the NHRA did away with modified sports and the modified Vettes ended up in gas for the most part if they did not exceed 10%. If they exceeded 10% they were placed in altered. Often you can tell if the picture is pre 68 or post 68 by the class designation on the car but some of the cars that ran in 66 for instance were the same as 69-the NHRA only changed the designation starting in 68.
Jim you are right on, I might add that most of the corvettes only had a 10% set back, if they had the 25% they went into altered. One time at NY National Speedway they classed my MG as B/G, it had a 25% setback. After that it was classed as a C/A. Pat
Pat the 25% setback cars were a hoot to watch although the word that comes to mind with me is cringe. I remember watching some dance around the big end. Ron Reader told me his blue Midwest sponsored 62 Vette with 25% setback would sometimes just turn left on the big end. Had to have a big set to drive some of those cars IMO.
