Those are all early '56 Vettes. Late '56 and '57 had chrome headlight bezels.

 

Wow! Good catch of that little detail.

 

Good eye, and for the (over) restoration crowd, note the fit & finish of the hoods on the 3 front & center subjects..

Car is Delmo Johnson's original Grand Sport (ch***is GS003 iirc) with 1964 paint. Bought from John Mecom when Mecom provided Zora Duntov money to get all five GS's out of Chevrolet before GM crushed them. I worked/crewed on this car at Johnson Chevrolet on Ross Avenue in Dallas and race tracks like Green Valley.
(small eta: post #5510 in this thread shows the same blue color on cars that came through John Mecom's Houston race works in 1964 - this car and Ferrari 250 GTO's owned and raced by John Mecom and Tom O'Connor.)

Drawing of Delmo's Grand Sport (co-driven with Dave Morgan) and Jim Hall's white Grand Sport (co-driven with Roger Penske) at 1964 Sebring. (Dave Morgan and Hap Sharp of Chaparral fame were racing ***ociates from Tulsa.)


ETA: Delmo at the wheel at Green Valley Raceway Texas in June 1964. I crewed this race. Carroll Shelby paid Delmo to race as Modified cl*** so his Cobras could win Production cl***.

Same Grand Sport as above Delmo leading first lap at Sebring 1965 ahead of Richie Ginther in Ford GT40


In those days the five Grand Sport Corvettes were regularly repainted and ownership p***ed around to keep GM from finding and destroying them. It was one hell of a shell game.

Sebring 1965 was "The Flood" with many teams cutting holes in cars floorboards to let rainwater out.


ETA: Short video of start of 1965 Sebring (Italian video). Look for Delmo Johnson's incredible start at 0:12. (at 0:10 Jim Hall jumping into Chaparral 2A he co-drove to victory with Hap Sharp.)


(tiny unrelated factoid - Chaparral Cars got their name from Dallas Chaparrals car club. Jim Hall previously worked at Carroll Shelby's dealership in Dallas and knew club members from there. Never thought to ask if he was a member. Club established 1945.)
