I watched that car one time stand it up on the rear bumper twice in one run and it did not appear like he lifted and I believe he still turned a 10.60 if my memory serves me (at Milan in the late 60s when it was owned by George Foltz running under the name Pron***o). One of my favorite cars to watch. Impressed me every time it ran.

Jim I thought it looked familiar but could not place it. Then you mention "Pronto" and I have an aha moment.

Pat, here is a picture of it in 1969 with Roger Davenport alongside. He drove the car to a B/G win at Indy in 69 and wheeled the car all the way to the finals of street eliminator, losing a close one. Also including a picture of it at the World Finals in 69 as well.

Pron***o appears to have a 3/4 ton truck rear axle , I have seen this on several 60s drag cars. I understand that they are stronger than the stock Vette rear end and are full floating... But also very heavy with big *** brake drums. What was the advantage over an Olds - Pontiac rear?

No real advantage Lumpy, mostly they were Dana 60's and run as is. They were also cheap I believe. A very heavy rear and about the strongest.

Colin, we ran a car similar to Pron***o and raced the same tracks. Pron***o was the old black Midwest car and when Ron Reader owned it he only ran 4 speeds with an Olds/Pontiac rear. When he sold the car after the 67 season the new owners switched to a Torqueflite and I believe it still had the Olds/Pontiac in the 68 season. in 1968, we ran the same engine (427 stack injected) in a 57 Vette with a Turbo 400 and an Olds/Pontiac with a few different gears. For the 69 season, Pron***o stepped up to a clutchflite and we changed over to a clutch turbo. Leaving the line at a higher RPM with the shock on the rear end was a bit of a different animal. With the Goodyears the cars hooked pretty good even without the glue and cars were pretty hard on the axles. We ran Summer Brother and Henry axles and they were stout but not unbreakable. We had a rack for a backup set of axles in the large tool box we had on the front of the open trailer. For 69, we also switched to a truck axle like Pron***o but I believe it was more for the availability of axle ratios then anything else (according to my memory at least). My buddy Ray owned the car and it was his decision. I seem to remember we had some pretty wild gear ratios once we made the switch. We also ran without front brakes so the big drums were not unwelcome.

Once the 70s came around it was not uncommon for guys to switch from Olds/Pontiac rear to Dana 60s like Pat pointed out. The 60 Vette ch***is I bought from Ricky Moore ran gas in the 60s with a Pontiac rear and when Ricky ran Modified production in the 70s he switched to the Dana 60 with Henry axles. It now has modern aftermarket axles but Ricky gave me the old ring and pinion and Henry axles-stout little ****ers. Vetrod Jim also gave me a spool and a set of old Henry axles for Olds/Pontiac, more for sentimental reasons than anything else. The Dana 60s are a bit heavier than the Pontiacs but they were worth it.

Loveoftiki, that is a great looking 61. Had a neighbor in the late 70s with a blue 61 fuelie. I like the dog dish caps and black walls much more than the fake knock off hubcaps with whitewalls. Airbox and tanker cars came with the small caps and blackwalls for the most part (little wider wheels).

Dog dish, bottle cap, standard/base hub caps, no matter what you call them when on a stocker/muscle car be it a Corvette, Belair, Catalina, Plymouth Savoy or Ford custom. With Blackwell tires it just screams "bad *** mean" IMO.

  28. I just tore the 57 down for a repaint in hugger orange and a re-power (327/muncie 4 gear). Part of that little project is body colored steelies with dog dish caps. I’ll keep the torque thrusts to switch out occasionally. 36A09AFB-FA46-4051-BB40-E5B88E67664C.jpeg 515FC481-4A6E-4E71-8124-DA1CC9AE4971.jpeg

Yeah it was funny...it was my favorite model I built as a young kid..said one day I’ll own one just like it..at 6’4 260 I looked at one...realized right there I wouldn’t own one of those or a Model A in my lifetime..but man that’s a beautiful Vette..wish you’d see more done like that
