Well, Mr Jim Dillon, you really screwed up this time. On Nov. 2 , a week ago I posted that you should write a history of early corvette Hot Rodding, M/SP, M/P and Gasser Corvettes. Then some one posts something about "Blevins corvettes'' and you rattle off a history of them that most have never heard of.

Point made. History needs you, just like me. Jim

  4. Yup, early 80's.

I owned a pretty stock unrestored 340HP '62 Vette from the mid 70's to mid 90's. I'd pull the wheelcovers off and take it down the drag strip a couple times a year. About 1989, I had a guy tell me "You shouldn't be treating the car like that" ..... I replied with "It's a Vette, how am I supposed to treat it?"

His ride was probably a Chrysler K-car.

  5. I'll bet this is a rerun but I have a soft spot for the 53-55's

Guys I appreciate the compliments but I also realize I need a bit more of the meat if I was to write an article or book on Vettes in racing (as well as a good amount of time). I actually wrote quite a bit when I was dealing with cancer back in 2009 to take my mind off of all that stuff, but I don't want to revisit that or anything similar just to make time.

Many good articles and books on the topic, such as Larry Davis' Gasser Wars reference some of the wins and losses at major meets. I keep my eyes open for any statistics of the major meets but certainly do not have enough. I have gone to the NHRA sites and they list winners with minimal discussion. If you guys know of any sites or sources for the entrants and results of the major meets (mainly NHRA but also AHRA is also welcome) during the 60s and early 70s let me know. For me to go past let's say 1975 is probably crazy for me since I was so busy at that time that I spent so little time with drag racing and know so very little of the era from that point on.

In the meantime if a car comes up and I can comment to help the thread I will continue to do so. Lately I have been lucky-there are plenty of cars where I have more questions than answers.

Thanks for filling in the blanks on the cars that you do know about Jim. I guess it boils down to the fact that many of us weren't actually there during the gasser days due to being born too late or if we were we didn't see many gasser or sports modified corvettes run at the track and there aren't many people to fill in the blanks for us. This is History that I am very interested in but I usually just post pictures because I wasn't there and only know what I read and most of the time I just find pictures with no description. I am hoping that someone knows some history to give the pictures some life.

Jason I appreciate you helping to keep this thread active with all of the great pics. I will try and fill in the blanks on the cars that I have some knowledge or information on.

These D/SP racers are pretty cool. More in line with my present project, which depending on the year would run either sports or one of the stock classes. Thanks for the pics-it gives me more motivation.

My father had multiple mid year cars in the late 70's early 80's. After restoring a few he became a judge and an authority on midyear restorations. He told me he knew of multiple cars that were not numbers match then became numbers match the next year, he was judging them. Blocks were getting restamped in the late 70's. Those cars could be 10-20 owners down the line now.
