Sometimes all it takes is just a good set of wheels and/or front bumper removal give them the hot rod look instantly.

image.jpeg Look closely at this picture, it looks like early racing corvettes being unloaded from a ship. Maybe they went overseas to race. They look like Gran Sports and might be headed to Lemans? Does anyone know anything else about it? image.jpeg

  11. You had me at 6 tail lights.

  12. Love those '61s and '62s. I'm definitely missing my red '62 after seeing these terrific examples. Here's a few pix of that car. I believe it was in '72 when I acquired it after getting out of the military. Ran a modified 302 Z/28 engine with a close ratio Muncie 4-spd and 4.88 gears. It passed everything but a gas station. Of course, back then I was running the expensive Sunoco 260 in it at a whopping $.35/gal. Don't remember what I paid for it, but sold it in '79 for $5k to a guy from NC when I went back to finish college.

Some pretty cool cars. Pat nice shot of the blue 62. Would like to see a picture with a bit more detail. Cool shot nevertheless.

Bowtie cool car. I worked at a Sunoco station for a number of years. Always fun to see what hot cars would come in and fill up with 260.

Jason you posted a pic of the 63 Grand Sport on the Nassau docks in front of the Bahama Star. They ran at speed weeks at Nassau in late 63 I believe and did well. GM had a ban though on racing which these episodes did not sit well with the stodgy management and GM ended up selling the cars to privateers like Penske and John Mecom who did quite well with them on their own,

The other pic of the two tone 62 is a 327/360 fuelie tanker (24 gallon gas tank-you can tell by the chrome gas cap on the gas panel door). I had thought that car went through Mecum but not totally sure. A 62 tanker is one "stocker" I would keep stock- although I would prefer it in black with the poverty caps and black walls.

Great post Bow tie, the car looks great and I bet that it was hard to let go of it. I like the fact that it ran a high winding 302. My dad had a green 68 Z28 that was stolen in the early 70s and he still talks about it. He bought it with money that he saved while in the military too. He said that it was a strong runner and how he was beating a V12 jag until he wound it out in 4th gear and the Jag grabbed another gear and left him.

1934 coupe Do you know the name of the corvette owner or car that you raced? Someone might have another picture of it. How fast was your MG running at that time?

Love the thread, been following for quite a while. Have a lightly modified '65 Coupe myself.
A few posts above showed the Blue Vette and 1934coupe's MG running at Dover. If that was Dover Plains Dragway, Pops used to pack my mom, sister, and I into his '61 and drive from upstate NY to run. He had a 302/4-speed in his as well, bought it in CA and drove it back. Rebuilt it and ran it. That must have been around 1970. I can still hear it backfiring when he's let off the gas as we drove though the switchbacks. I'll try and get a pic or two up soon.

  18. Thanks! Yes, it was hard to let go. Physically it's gone, but emotionally it's still with me. It's funny how one can get attached to a car like that. It's kind like how one can get attached to their pet. Crazy! That Z/28 engine was a high winder alright. That's a cool story about your dad racing a Jag. He must have been really shocked when the Jag pulled away.

Jimdillon, I swore by Sunoco 260. It was definitely good stuff. A lot of guys in town wud be using the cheaper stuff, even though they had a high performance car. Yet, one wud often see a Corvette filling up at the Sunoco station.

Ramjet1 it must not be an easy feat to pack 4 people into a 61 corvette, might not be that bad with a couple of little kids. Do you remember anything else about the car? Those 302 Chevys were mean once they got revved up. Some were out of the Z28s and some were made before Chevy did it and were sometimes called 301s. Post some pictures of your 65 and tell up a little about it. Here is a picture of packing people into sports cars.

Jim thanks for the clarification on the Gran Sports. I also like the road racers but they aren't my favorite.
I think that you are right on the 62 tanker it was for sale at Meecum Kissimmee in 2013 and was estimated to go for 250 -300 thousand but I never heard the results. It doesn't look like such a big number when you write it that way. I have an old magazine where it was featured and will dig it out and post it later.

"When the three Corvette Grand Sports arrived on the Nassau pier, they were truly an awesome sight. The wide fenders, large stock car tires, super modified hoods, and the powerful aluminum 377 cubic inch, 485 bhp Chevrolet engines with 58 mm Weber carburetors, truly made this a Corvette packed with hormones.

Team owner John Mecom, driving Grand Sport Coupe, chassis 003, led the three Grand Sports off the pier, toward the hanger that was to be their home for the Nassau Speed Week, everyone who saw them that day knew that they had seen something special. And special they were!"

Here are a couple of other pictures I was able to find (one is just a larger version of the photo in your post).

Thank you very much Gotgas. Even though the picture isn't the best it was obvious that there was a great story behind it and between you and Jim you have filled in the blanks. Those Gran Sports are legendary.

Does anybody have any pictures of the 63/64 vette that Vic Speed Shop in Saginaw Michigan ran? It later became an exhibition wheelstander.

Horrid, Do you have any more information on the car? Coupe or convertible, what color was it and did it have a name or lettering or distinguishing features? Many of the pictures that I have I don't know the history of the cars. Jim might also have some or know more about it.

I believe the car was a 63 split window coupe. Last I saw it the car was sporting a panel paint job with lots of browns, golds, and a little green. I think on the quarters it said Vic Speed Shop, but the quarters were hogged out for the big slicks, so the lettering was small. I do not think it had a name, but I am not sure. When it was a wheel stander it had a jet boat adapted drive train with the big block mounted in the rear sticking out of the window, at that time the split window piece was hacked out. This all might have been in the late 60's, maybe early 70's, so I may be in the land of OT.

  27. Isn't that Wally Cleaver and Eddie Haskell aka Tony Dow and Ken Osmond, respectively, from the "Leave it to Beaver" TV show? I don't remember the sports cars from that show, only Lumpy's '40 Ford.
