Jim I'm not exactly following but maybe a 57 265 or claiming as much to run less weight or fit in a certain class.

Pat I am sure the owner had his legitimate reason for running a 265 but it makes me wonder a bit. The car pictured is either a 58,59 or 60 Vette and the only engine available cubic inch wise was the 283. If it was a 56/57 body style then of course it makes more sense. There may be a provision in the rules in whatever sanctioning body he was competing in that allowed a 265 in the newer body style, but nevertheless a 283 lends itself to modification a bit more in my opinion unless you are allowed ie cylinder heads changes, and more than the standard bore increases etc etc. Just never remember seeing a 265 in the 58-60 models for whatever reason. I am sure he got the most out of it but it still has me wondering a bit I suppose.

Jim the #80 car is running a BM/SP car in the other lane on a T (trophy run) so with that hood scoop and what appears to be a blower I'm guessing it was a blown BM/SP car which was a 10#/cu.in. supercharged weight break. I'm not exactly sure of the numbers but I'm close. My car was 7#/cu.in. unblown in BM/SP.

Pat I am sure you are correct but I suppose it is my disdain (and possible ignorance) of the 265 as a performance engine that has clouded my judgment. If a nun was handy I am sure she would smack my knuckles for what I have typed on my keyboard. I can see the rollbar in his car as well so he was running in one of the MSP classes. One of my favorite combinations were the early to mid 70s modified eliminator Vettes with the high winding small inch SBC (some in the 268-278 range I believe) but these were anything but 265 blocks. I should be more open minded that guys that really know what they are doing should be able to make any engine sing.

  6. Here's some more of my junk. Had this about 14 years and this is about the only pic of it. Couldn't afford film in those days much less process it. I was spending my scratch on Crower cams with way too much lift, Hooker headers, Hurst shifter, Lakewood traction bars, Skyjacker air shocks. 340 horse, T-10 4-speed, 3.73 posi, 14x10 Cragars with L-60's, inch thick paint. This was my commuter for years to my bar job in San Francisco from Petaluma. It was also a stop light killer on the Great Highway, El Camino Real, Petaluma Blvd, Santa Rosa Ave. in the mid 70's. Loved that car. 62.jpg

Sting Ray that is great looking Vette. I would park that in my garage any day. Come to think about it by black 62 was originally a 340 hp and I run Hookers, and Lakewood bars (and bellhousing) 4 spd, 3:73 posi with Cragars. I have owned my black car for 40 years this year.

Still remember the day I brought it home. My cousins were in the truck equipment business and made an experimental wrecker (carried the car like a stork with straps-more innovative 40 years ago than it is today) and I borrowed it to pick up the car way on the other side of town. My cousin went with me and convinced me to turn on the yellow flashing lights all the way home (about an hour from home). Car was close to your color with new paint with a cracked block. Paint was new but horrendous. Ordered a 327/365 crate motor from Penske Chevrolet (actually ordered three different engines and the guys behind the counter laughed at me basically-the 365 was the only one they found in stock), and when I had everything I needed, I took a two week vacation and worked non stop pretty much to strip and paint the car with nitrocellulose black and installed the engine and had it on the road. Been a great car ever since. Bet you could wish that car back in your garage as well.

I always thought the mid year Corvettes should have had 3 tail lights per side, just like an Impala.

Thanks Loudbang. Good way to start out the day listening to a D/M Corvette turning some pretty decent RPMs. When the gassers started to fade in the early 70s I became hooked on the sounds and antics of these old Vettes that ran in Modified Eliminator. As far as sounds at the line and for the first 660 ft there was no other drag cars that could match it for holding my interest. I was kind of a drag strip junky in the 60s but reality started to creep in after graduating college and I married in the early 70s and worked part time and went to law school full time so time for drag racing was at a premium but I had to play hooky every once in awhile and sneak out to the local tracks when the modified guys had a decent meet-always well worth it. They were the last drag cars that really held my interest. Thank God for some of the Vintage and Nostalgia meets today so that we can try to relive the old memories in person.

    Morning,
Another cool Northwest car! Any old timers recognize the track? Years ago, [late 80's, early 90's] I played a small part in ruining one of these cool old drag cars. WA. state car, C 2 convertible, 64 or 65 if I remember correctly, black with flames, straight front axle Olds/Pontiac chrome rear, skinny slots up front ETIII's with the gold paint still on them in the rear. Replacement frame was purchased, narrowed in the rear, yep turned into another pro street car! Car was painted bright red, guy who owned it called it the "Glass Rat", featured in a magazine I do not recall. I bought the ETIII's complete with a decent set of Goodyear Blue Streak slicks for 25 bucks! Cut the slicks off with a sawzall and my Buck knife. Happy as a lark when I sold those wheels for $350 at the Portland swap meet awhile later. Car was supposed to have raced, Arlington, Seattle, and Puyallup. That car sound familiar to any of you web footed Western WA. or Canadian guys? Our Mother of blessed acceleration please forgive us our automotive transgressions!

I'm sorry, but I can't say anything good about the silver Mongoose. it looks like it may be a '63.

Doug and Hotdoggin DaddyO I may have to disagree. There are so many restored versions of the 63 split window out there that no one will ever have a hard time seeing what they looked like when they came out of the factory. Unless it is a Z06 I probably would not spend any time looking at one for any length of time at a show. Don't get me wrong, I really like the split window and came really close to owning one years ago. That being said what has more let's say visceral heritage, the Vettes on the drag strip or some guy with an ascot and driving gloves jumping in one back in the mid 60s for a drive to the country club? Today we have guys taking 63 split windows and making resto mods and sending the original parts to the ebay buyers so they can pretend their cars have "original" parts. Resto mods seem to get a pass yet there is nothing in Vette history that supports it. It's their dime let them do whatever they wish I suppose-none of my business. Mid yearVettes were pretty good on road courses and OK in competition when it came to turning corners. They certainly held their own on the drag strip for sure and that is what the owner of Mongoose wanted to achieve. He wanted to build a really fast 63 Vette for the drag strip and looks be damned apparently, he achieved his objective.

Pete Arend was a wealthy guy that wanted to drag race his 63 and it was just an old Chevy to be quite honest. I may have to chastise him if it was a valuable Ferrari but it was not. It is simple to figure out why the name Mongoose as he wanted to show up the Snakes if he could (Cobras). I have read he had several versions starting out with a BBC and then switching to a 426 Hemi injected with a cluthflite eventually. He ran it in MSP first and later ran in the altered class. Old Vettes back in the 60s were worth a few hundred when they had been used up. Guys had no reason to believe they would end up as valuable as they were. Guys spent large sums customizing these cars and that is part of their heritage-some of the "damage" was irreparable. I am not a fan of some but I understand and accept them. If that or this car bothers the purists then it is time for them to get real. Arends wanted to race and have a good time and the car was reportedly mildly successful. He probably had a lifetime of good memories. The car was not that big of a deal, the fun he had was. Probably a bit more exiting than the trip to the country club in my opinion.

It is certainly not the way I would have done the car but it was his money and vision. I kind of look at it and say to myself "Wow" but on the other hand I appreciate it. If I went to car show I would walk right past a row of stock split windows to take a look at this car for sure. As far as I know the whereabouts of the car is unknown.

OK Jim, let me qualify what I meant. I have no problem with cutting one up, making a race car. I just don't like the style of this one, ugly wheel wells and way too high stance. Go back up the page to the Final Solution or Raunchy Corvette and I'm in love.

Oh don't get me wrong, I would love to hack the hell out of an old 'Vette. In fact my brother-in-law, (BCR here on the HAMB),and I were just talkin' about it. It was brought to our attention that there is a road race, here in Kansas, where individuals bring out their vintage cars and run them around. We got to talkin' about building something to beat the hell out of. Well, a few beers later, and the subject turned to '63-'67 Vettes. My thing, with the picture in question, is it's not finished. I like speed as well as how good she looks. No biggee.

I certainly would not draw up this example if I raced one but in a way it is kind of cool. What would you like to see run in the quarter mile this car with a 426 hemi and a clutchflite or a stock model? As much as I liked the junior stockers I would pay to see this car go through its paces for sure.
