I read in one of my offroad magazines, and article referring to the legal dangers of taking "souveniers" from Federal/BLM lands. With Post-911 laws and loopholes, no telling what you could be charged with... Sorry to sound so pessimistic...

If you can get permission to take a car or more, fine. If not, don't mess with them. Old cars are part of the charm of wandering around old mining towns and such. We have a great mine near me that still has old boom trucks and such up there. It really shows the typ of work they were doing.
    I personally wouldn't consider it.

    Nope try again.

  14. The actual laws regarding that sort of thing vary from state to state.

Which is good because on junk day as a kid I used to go around and ended up picking up a '40-ish Packard script bumper from one place.. and another place I got a 50's-60's 45 collection with lots of goodies - and a '29 Model A steel hood that had been on a hot rod and had this homegrown utter abortion of a tin hood scoop cut and brazed into it.

  15. Every time one of these posts about"abandoned" cars is posted here- I cannot believe the mindset of some of the members of this board.....
Call me conservative or a prude, but all this stuff belongs to someone....and that someones not you...You know it whenyou ask.
    Its just wrong.
Let it lay-its simply stealing friend.....
Out in the midwest here it is pretty plain how property owners feel.
You stop and get out of your vehicle and you will soon find someone else is right there and will be escorting you off of or worse yet- shooting at your ass instead, to get you moving on out of there.......
I personally would not be suprised at either result.

I just read four pages of cry baby goodie two shoes......thief, thief....wah wah. Man, for a bunch of guys who drive cars that would scare the crap out of most of society your panties get twisted awefully quickly.

It's not like he stole the body and claimed the pirate booty to himself, he actually came into this post asking how to get it on the up and up. But we all know that for the most part there's no way to make that happen. Hell, If there's a duece roadster body sitting somewhere you mean to tell me you aren't going to bring it home, pretty much no matter what? I'll call you a liar, then ask where it is.
Think about it this way. most of the parts we like to use are vintage, very vintage. bought at a swap meet, ebay, or car show. you think those parts weren't obtained unscroupulously? think again. a lot of stuff that has been stolen at some point is sold for cash at events like these. Remember, at the end of the day, possision is 9/10ths of the law. if he's got it in his garage they'd be hard pressed to prove it hasn't been there for a while.

    ------end rant. more beer.

There right about the water, but they technically can't get out of the boat!!
Even if theres a public road next to a Private lake you can enter the lake off that & the person who owns the lake can't do anything about it.I dealt with this subject alot when i fished in RI.People get very territorial about water rights & shit.DEM usually will back up the person trying to get in, not the land owner.

  21. Yep what Digger said.
I posted a few years ago, anout a '39 Ford Standard Coupe, and 27 Roadster, that had been abandoned on some property here, they owner of the property was nowhere to be found- he had moved instead of paying Child Support, and the property was up for auction. I asked how illegal/immoral it would be to just go "acquire" those cars before the auction actually happened, and started a firestorm of controversy here about it.
As far as I know, the '39 and the '26 are still sitting there. People on this board accused me of being a thief, and all I ever actually took was some digital photos....

  22. lot of nay sayers here...check out the place,if anything is worth taking home, then check who has legal rights to it.
I just found a 39 willys in the woods today(empty shell).I took all I could(no tools)why?´cause someone might need those parts to save a restorable car.
here in sweden it was common practice during the 30´s to 70´s to just try to hide the stuff you were to lazy or cheap to recycle, often behind the barn or in the woods near by.I got a lot of stuff this way,and helped a lot of enthusiasts with their projects with these parts.sometimes I get a stupid customer, who thinks I should give them the stuff ´cause I got it for "free"well, gas, research, hauling, etc etc. is not free, when this happens,I rather take the actual part with me in my grave then selling it to him/her for a million bucks.
I hope all of you that called him a thief, can swear by god that they never ever had a stolen artifact in their possesion.
    rant off....

  23. So you didn't check who had legal rights, and say it is okay to steal, then sell the parts, to save old cars?
I'd rather be a naysayer than a thief.

is it better they sit there and rot??????? if i was you i would really try my hardest to do it legaly

  26. car was hid in the woods instead of being junked, common practice here.if I was to follow the swedish law, then the "environment office"(not translateable) should been contacted to fine the current land owner,as it´s against the law to have junk laying on your property, even if it was put there 50 yrs ago by the previous owner.the land owner would have to pay a fine, even if the cars/junk was removed instantly, cause they already been sitting there for such long time.oh,and we have something called "everymansright" wich means that anyone can enter your property,as long as it´s not your yard/garden or crops.
and I´ll say it again:swear to god that you never ever had a stolen artifact in your possesion before calling people thiefs and what not.
I bet everyone that posted in this thread never bought anything that couldn´t be traced back to the first owner,to be sure it never was obtained in a unlawful way.yeah,right....

  27. Nothin bad about Purple here ,I like him......
-but has anyone posting "take it its unattended" ever stopped to think that every word he .....and you have typed here, is archived and available as evidence in a court of law?
Agencies of our friendly government routinely scan sites for just such information.......now how do you all feel about stealing and admitting it here?

  28. what, in Sweden it's illegal to find the current owner of the property and ask them if you can clean up that old junk so they don't get into trouble with the environment office, or whatever it is?

Willys tin is a bastard to find in the US, I'm sure someone could use fenders, doors, a roof, etc. from that one.

  30. it´s not illegal to find and tell the land owner,no,but it is your duty to inform the state of things to the goverment, sounds wierd,I know.besides,I´d never ever take anything that could be of any value to the land owner without asking.wierd thing is,any landowner in sweden that´s not a total car nut, wouldn´t even understand the value of a duesenberg roadster, conversation would go something like this:"what, you want that piece of shit!,you must be really stupid, but hey,if you want it,I´ll even help you load it on a trailer just to get rid of it.yes, this is a rare 30´s car,I would be prepared to actually pay for it.haha, very funny, you want me to help you with the loading or what?"yes, that has happend more than one time,(not the duesenberg though)
