Could I get in trouble for taking it?

  1. a platt map should show ownership
go see the local city --- county ...
we check on local properties all the time ...
tocheck if the abandoned house is for sale ... whatever .. being sure of owner ship is the place to start...
be sure ...as someone can sell stuff they don't own any more as repossesion's and neighbors want stuff gone fast

all old tin i have found ...came cheaply enough and i have gone thru the proper channels.. even scoring titles for free stuff

pictures of the items desired will help get it done when seeking the final owner... if you want "that old car fine" " its th 32 in the fallen bldng thats not for sale"

When I was in high school I woulda killed for some vintage tin. My dad ran up on a glass shop where the owner had a bunch of neat stuff sittin out back in the way overgrown weeds. He wouldnt sell the A coupe shell that I really wanted but he had a pile of T frames too. I thought a frame would be a cheap start to a rod, so I asked the owner how much for a frame? He informed me that there are no frames back there! I ain't a thief but we're talkin about a broke, stupid high school kid. Myself and a friend with a pickup and saw(had to cut down a small tree) took one of his nonexistant frames on a quiet Sunday evening. I know,I know, shoulda just got the coupe!!

Like one of the guys said, get a phony bill of sale, and go in there with a hard hat on in the middle of the day like u owned the place. I have seen plenty of useable stuff go to the crusher because nobody saved it, and being bold, not sneaking around usually doesn't call much attention to you. Do your homework first and see if somebody owns it...good luck...got lots of free stuff from places that were bulldozed a few weeks after I got in there....

I own a little property here and there. And I can't be everywhere all the time. I know this is the HAMB and we're all faithful to the hot rod culture, but I'm having a hard time finding the difference between you 'noble knights' that want to save something that doesn't belong to you, and the common thief that wants to liberate my tools from the back of my truck.

Don't spout this horseshit about how you know better than the owner. And there is always an owner. Maybe he doesn't make himself available to you at your convenience, but if you want something bad enough you'll find him.

Stealing is stealing. No amount of warped justification changes that fact.

I just hope I don't find one of you bad-assed geniuses taking something of mine because you think your judgement about an item is better than mine. I'll introduce you to the business end of my S&W and that don't stand for Stewart Warner. And here's the law; I can use just enough force to keep a thief in place until the sheriff arrives. And that 'just enough' is a wide river brother.

    Good luck.

I'd say first, find out for sure if it's on public land. Then, barge in there with a truck and a trailer--and a buddy or two--and start yanking cars.

And if they nab you, talk real nice. Don't wear your Hell's Angels vest. Might not want to carry your Buck knife, your brass knuckles, or your crack pipe.

And if they brace you, tell 'em that bit someone wrote on this thread, about your grandpa's car breaking down 60 years ago and you picking it up. That oughta make somebody laugh.

Plus--having dealt with some cops--I'm guessing the worst this would be is theft, probably misdemeanor because who can say what a rusty old bucket is worth.

You'll be fine. Just get your nerve up before you go in there 'cause you don't want to lose your nerve halfway through. Cops are like dogs: they can smell fear--and my bro-in-law is a cop so I can say that.

    Smell ya later,

I've read what you can do in Del and RI and feel that I should point out that the same is not true in Kansas and Missouri. If your on your way to the Hamb Nationals and see something off the road that you would like to take home, resist the temptation. Both states have right to carry laws and are highly against trespassing. Someone liberated a 31 cowl that had been promised to me a while back. Leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

I only read up to LarryT's post, and I lived on my family farm and still have a bunch of my vehicles out there. We also got a lot of old vehicles out there. To all you city pukes that don't get this, I'll just say this to you:

"NOTHING IN THE COUNTRY BELONGS TO YOU!"

Just because a place is abandoned, doesn't entitle you to go in and ransack the place. Nothing is ever really "abandoned", it may be neglected, but rest assured someone owns it, all land is owned. There is no such thing as "public" land. The closest to "public" you will find is government owned, and even then you aren't entitled to it.

I just got talking to a guy today while I was back at the farm, he restores antique furniture in his old barn. His barn is always painted nice, his house is nice, his lawn is mowed, but he's had people go out to his place and look in his barn while he's home, and he overheard them say "They sure keep this up nice for being abandoned." he walked out the door then.

Jim V, I'd like to see you try getting in a gun fight with a land owner who informs you you're unwanted there, see who the law arrests. Maybe you need to tell the guys that I plugged their bed full of 9mm rounds after I caught them snooping around my mustang, my 49 chevy, and my grandpas dodge truck in my yard at 5:30 in the morning.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for rescuing classics, but Purple, do it the legal way. If the land isn't posted, you can go look around, see if anything is there worthwhile. Then track down the owner/caretaker and see if you can work out a deal.

Although I got a good idea out of this thread, I need to go get the VINs off everything on my farm and if anything is stolen, get it back.
