History Could this be the rarest 32 3 Window Ford in the World ?

In 1932 Ford in the UK released the Model Y. It looked like a 3/4 size Model 40. To my best understanding they were produced at the Dagenam plant and shipped in knockdown form to ***embly plants around Europe. They were also shipped over here to Australia, minus the Body.

The Australian Ford ***embly plant was located in Geelong Victoria and almost all the bodies for the Fords were produced here to cir***vent the domestic Tariff laws that were in place at the time on complete imported vehicles. The flow on effect was to create a fully fledged Australian Automotive industry, several decades later.

In the UK the Model Y was available as a Four door and Two Door Saloon and Delivery Van a****st others, but in Australia there some unique styles found nowhere else including a three window coupe.

In case you are wondering where these references are coming from, it’s from a book called the “The History of Ford In Australia” by Norm Darwin, he also wrote a companion book about the Australian GM ***embly plant known as Holden. Chrysler Australia had their own pressing plant known as TJ Richards. Any mid thirties coupe or roadster produced by these companies is extremely rare, a large production run might be three or four hundred, so it’s not surprising most people are not aware of them, even in Australia.

  7. We (family) have a very nice '33 Plymouth with a Holden roadster body. We believe one of four built. Word is the set-up versus build number is a big reason why Chrysler cut ties with Holden.
My favourite rare aussie Ford is the '34 Model 40 5 p***enger roadster. I've seen 2. I've never seen a 'little' (English) 3W Ford Coupe. Any 'Y' is pretty uncommon.

I agree, doesn’t seem to be many around anymore.
As kids, 30 - 40 years ago we saw them as undesirable.
Our local ford dealership has a restored 2 door 1934 Y on it’s showroom floor.
One currently on ‘trade me’ for sale.

I remember seeing model Ys for sale at car flea markets in England as a kid in the 70s. Had no Idea they built 3 windows in AU , very cool. Any survivors?

  19. I remember seeing a Model Y roadster for sale at the Turlock California swap meet, it was missing the trunk / boot lid. It was sold, and I was in contact with owner a while ago. It would have been a nice project with an aluminum Buick 215" engine.

The key to these cars being produced was the " TAXABLE" horse power.

The Commonwealth based taxes on engine sizes and their related HP.
No wonder the US had a revolution over English taxes.

That's a "coupster" candidate if I ever saw one! It wouldn't look so bad then.

Way back in the darkest recesses of my mind, I believe there was an outfit in the USA that had fibergl*** Model 40s.
