Since I got tires mounted to my wheels I've been itchin' to see how they look. So I rolled the rear axle under the frame, tossed the motor, cab and bed on and pushed her outside for a good look.
I think the cab looks good not chopped with the stock length bed. The stance is where I want it too. I was concerned with the tall rear tires.
If I can keep up the progress at the rate I'm going, I should be driving it by summer.

    I can't wait!:D

man, that's a *****in little truck...and I love the military theme and the tall rear tires...that truck would look good with some dirt track style fenders front and rear, which I almost never like on hot rods...good work man...

hmmm, I didn't notice it before but the body doesn't follow the framerail lines...and I'm sure since you just dropped the motor in for pics that you didn't "degree" it to get the carbs flat, but it is a good suggestion even if only for an aesthetic reason...I still say it looks good regardless, but those two minor things would improve the overall look a bit...

    HaHaHa....I like it Tim! Only thing is, I'm 6' 3" and I wouldn't fit.:D

Johnnyx: The body does follow the frame, it's just kinda sitting on there in the pic. I set the motor up parallel to the frame. It's the intake that angles the carbs forward. I may do something about that though. Drop the trans an inch or two would probably do it.

just make your floors drop down between the rails instead of having a flat floor siting on top of them and youll get back your 4 or so inches ; )

I was kinda figuring it was misaligned just because it was thrown together for the pics...regardless it looks good...oh, and have you given any thought to the fenders?...some ribbed tire covers would look good on there...or flat trailer fenders trimmed to fit...

Wasn't plannin' on runnin' fenders but....... I do have an old ribbed spare tire cover that would work good. Might be a good idea since I live on a dirt road.

You probably already know this but your carb mounting flanges should be level with the ground when the car is sitting level. That will put the engine higher in the front from where you have it or the transmission lower from it's present location. Anyway just put a level on the carb bases and build the mounts when the carb base is level.

Don't chop it. If you do you'll regret it if your over 5' tall. The pickups just don't have the room and it looks great the way it is. Good job.

    Cool truck.

What are those wheels off? What size are they and what size are those tires?

Your ride looks great. What are the wheels? They look like save-a spare wheels but they appear to have 5x5 1/2 bolt pattern. I have been looking for 18 in. wheels similar to those to mount some 18" champ car tires.

He looks like he is 5' tall in the photo.

    No seat?

A mock up is a great chance to notice these things.

I would raise the front motor mounts and angle them, rather than lowering the trans. It will amke that little chebbie look bigger.

I like the no chop look, it matches the theme. It looks like something a bored GI rodded up. Although I think 3 inches of channel would really help.

    I love it. Very cool.

Did you have to mortgage the house for those rims?:D

Seriously, they look killer. How about some specs on them and the tires. About how tall are they?

I doubt I could find some like that but I am considering a taller rim/tire combo.

    Thanks guys!
Repoman, I'm 6'3" but there is no seat in it yet.
I think I will go ahead and change my mounts to correct the carb angle.
This is my first hot rod and really appriciate the constructive critizism(sp?). Good or bad!:)
I've also got some old military gauges I'll be using. And some military blackout lights for taillights. I saw some seats at the local John Deere dealer I'd like to use too. Look similar to bomber seats but are less $$$.

dirty: didn't have to mortgage the house for 'em. got 'em cheap!:D Size=18"x @ 4".
Tires are Excesilor 4.50-18 on the front @ 27" tall. Rears are Firestones, 7.00-18 @ 33" tall.

  19. Awesome. They say stance is everything, the unchopped Cab works well with the big rims.

    Pretty cool.

Take everyone's advice with a grain of salt. Build it to your vision. If you build it to ours, you'll never get done and your head will spin off from all the suggestions. :)

    HaHaHaHa...Thanks haring. Well said.
In the end I'll still build what is stuck in my head.
The SBC is temporary. Got a flathead that I'm collecting parts for. May not be as quick but will go alot better with the overall look and feel I'm trying to acheive.

  22. if the carbs are level, then the motor will be running down hill. Kinda makes it look like an old sway back mule. If the trans and rear end are in the same plane, all is well with the world. I'd rather have the valve covers and headers level with the frame. Makes for a much nicer look IMHO.

if you don't have the carbs level then you might have trouble with the floats and its my su****iion that a sbc chevy was designed that was so the rear of the engine sits down in the rear is so the oil is always running back into the sump

OK, now everyone's got me worried. I've seen plenty of rods with SBC's and the engines are LEVEL in the frame. But intakes also have level carb bases.
Should I remove my intake and have the carb bases machined level? Is this intake possibly for a boat?
I'm hesitant about dropping the motor in the back. I think it'll look like **** with the valve covers/starter/header flanges/etc. at a different angle as everything else. Look at the pic and 'block out' the carbs.
But then again, I want it to run good first and foremost. If I justgotta angle the motor I will.
Aaaaahhhhh! What to do...what to do?

well first off id make sure your driveline angles are correct.

example, pinion is 3 deg up so the trani tail shaft is 3 deg down. i think most intakes are set up for about that much angle toward the back. if you set it like that and the carbs are still more then 1 or 2 degs off --which you could then work into your drive line angle. just make some adapter for your manifold to make it level, well more like shims then adapters but you get the idea.

get your driveline angles fist then worry about the rest, itll prolly go away once you have it right

DING DING DING, we have a winner.

Yeah you'll see cars with the valvetrain level all the time. Doesn't mean its right.

My two huge pet peaves is level engines, and mounting the block not snugged up to the firewall.
