Holy cow Mike, what's the dilemma here? The Plymouth is nearly done, comes with a ton of stuff, could be on the road in the spring, etc., etc. The Chevys as common as assh*@les are in need of a lot of work. And you are asking us what car to buy? Gimme the Plymouth-a no brainer! Of course, my mantra is "Mopar or nocar." Well, I do have a couple GM cars and a Ford, but that is only because I fell off the wagon for a short time.
OK Mike, I gotta say that given the options the ply is the deal after i saw you get a bunch of parts to sell off and offset the cost of your project. stay with the chevy drivetrain as it is in and done and works and you are paying for that anyway. If you were to change it all why pay for something you aint using. The chevys are way overpriced and wont get out of town with a 216 anyway. you could raise it up a bit and make a 60's street racer look, not way up gasser but don't mess with me bad ass look. chopped top would lend itself to that and not be a tail dragger which you aren't .. and it would be a good hamb drags car .... .
The Plymouth has a nice look to it...kinda like a post-war, pre-hornet Hudson. I guess if you like Chevies you could always put a Chev or Vette grille in it.
THATS exacty what got me about that Ply , I have a very clear picture in my head of a 60's chopped drag car ,ala CarToon's, not really a gasser, but a very tough looking chopped coupe look w five spokes maybe thin white side wall cheaters if I can find a 26" set ,a tire rake kind of thing, the motor out of the 57 is already there and has been upgraded a bit more now a Victor JR , "bigger cam and PJ roller timing gears, just lumpy enough to have the right " Don't F..k with me sound " w the smitty's just enough exaust "pop" , the decisions already made really, but being a chevy guy I was hesitating a wee bit, but ONLY A VERY LITTLE, as it is already set for Chevy power , not really a dilema ,just wanted some opinions b4 the big jump , I like the other coupes, don't get me wrong, but they are starter cars and never will be ready for spring as V8 powered rods, mild street customs yah , but not really drivers.I've got a pile of 60's custom and race stuff to go on this car like the red flake strng wheel, cal custom parts and 55-7 fenderwell headers that usually fit fat fender cars well (I have to check that after the motor is in) to make it more era correct
some of the older member will remember the other Ply i bought a while ago, now sold as it became apparent that someone had replaced the whole back half of the car with one from another and messed it up, the back of the car was cocked and the trunk lines did'nt match, but at that time I called Plydo and surprize surprize , HE said if he was doing one for himself he would go SBC! MUCH cleaner /easier swap and he should know ,LOL
All things considered, I'd say you HAVE to get the Plymouth. Tons of spare parts and a nicely done chop make me wonder why it's not already in your garage. Take all of thos spare parts and sell them and recoupe part of your investment. Nik
thats the plan ,first thing in the morning I think, my ebay career has been on hold as I don't have much left to sell there, but this deal will give me a PILE iof stuff to recoup my investment , and we have a number of HAMB'rs who are doing these cars, who have asked already , be some good deals avail. I think, but shipping from this end sucks and I hate it
Mike: I had one from 68 through 79. My father and and I put a sbc in it and I drove it to high school and college. My brother drove it after that until it was stolen and wrecked. It was way outside the norm at the time. Hotrods were out of fashion and Plymouths were never popular as hotrods. Ignoring the name plates, I think the styling of these cars is way better than the fords or chevrolets of the time. I have three suggestions for you: 1. If you get the side moldings, and front fender moldings with it do not sell them off. The cars always look better with them, and someone will want to put them back on someday. 2. I have never seen anyone improve upon the OEM grille. Many have tried, all have failed. 3. Similar to #1, do not dispose of any other OEM items like bumpers, steering wheel, dash, etc. When you decide to move on, the next buyer will pay more to have the options to reconfigure the car to his tastes.
yes it has sevearl sets of the nouldings , no stock column or Strng wheel tho as it was converted to tilt/tele sometime in its past, i have always liked the style of these cars w the exception of the RR wheel wells ,they look too 50's to my taste, but thats just me and can be corrected if i choose too ,BTW, my painter guy just left, we made a paint deal NOW, I have to choose a color, as long as its not RED ,YELLOW or GLOSS BLACK,I want but the wife cancelled comp orange so I'm open to most others than those, but it has to be traditional
Alright I bent to the majority , (as if i had'nt alraedy decided) and here it is itroducing the next junk pile rod , some judisious old school dickering got me a new set of headesr a rebuilt 350 turbo and a low milage 350 /4 bbl and MORE parts total $6018.00 including the haul , I have a paint job of my solid non metallic color choice coming as soon as i get it to my buddy's place, tarded some parts for a paint job done right , parts go AFTER MY approval ,drove the 57 moredoor home in the snow fall today for last time B4 its parting out prior to getting shipped
CONGRATTS DUDE!!!!! One thing though, put some skirts on it.That car would make a killer taildragger!!!!! Oh yeh,If you know Chevys, then you could build a mopar.I just swiched to mopar and I'll never go back......course mine is a HEMI.oops, sorry bout that one. GOOD LUCK!!!
You see a lot more fords & chevys of that era out there, so it's kind of an original way to go. If it were me (and obviously it's not me, so it's somewhat pointless to bring this up), I'd run the sbc for the time being, and start putting a 50's hemi or early 60's max wedge together to run in it someday.
Soooooo. After all that crap about not wanting ANY Mopar from 38 up in all those want ads in the clasifieds, he buys a 46 Mopar?????? Guess maybe they weren't so bad after all? Looks like a decent score, even if it got ruined with the chevy motor. Least the damage was done before you did it.... you can always say "Not my fault, I bought it that way." I'll forgive ya about that motor, looks like you'll be cruising in style this summer. Gene
actually i think 35-41 mopars were included as wanted, but hey, just could'nt pass on this 46 ,nothing else came even remotely close in value per buck,it'll stay chevy powered and most likly NOT a taildragger or a nose high traditional gasser either, more 60 street drag type of car ,tire rake -five spokes, fenderwell headers, glass packs, flake strng wheel hurst floor shift etc ,might even have a COLOR on it instead of primer or 5 different colors picture the one below w fives ,thin WSW's (maybe cheaters) and a 3" chop, but then maybe I'll just buy a pr of flared skirts n leave it the way it is except w color,my biggest concern at the moment is picking a color, red + bright yellow are out.
no ,but the "fender shirt king" lists them ,no price yet even, you have to email him for a quote and pics, the more i look this ride over ,the more i like it myself , the selling point for me WAS the Chevy running gear as its all the parts I have around here. to me, the only thing better would have been a 392H or Poncho 428/455 power , but hell ya can't have it all right? IF I do change out the motor it will probably be to a BBC. There's a pile of parts I am not going to use so I will be selling things like the HL covers, goofy dash knobs (too over sized to my taste) ,hub caps,WWW's, rally wheels's, power leather bench seat, extra dash's and grille ,mouldings ,the stock or the Brizz bumpers- etc. to finance the interior redo and heater/wiper kit purchases, but I have to go over the car too see what i need and what i do not first, the hub caps ,knobs and HL covers are for sure.I'll keep the lakers as they do a nice job of replacing the spendy and impossible to find nice rocker mouldings for the cars.
Looking for a plymouth please someone let me know what you have pm me and lets see if we can make something happen. Thanks,,ponyboy
