I'm planning on using a complete 1940 rear end assembly under my 30 coupe running an 8BA and 39 transmission. For those of you who have gone this route before, I have a couple of questions. First, how many of the 10 leaves did you remove for a good ride? Second, did you reverse-eye the main leaf? I'll be using a 32 frame from Blackboard Hot Rods with a flat rear cross member.
I used the top tapered leaf and four of the long leaves. I also reversed the eye of the main leaf. The short cut off leaves are used as spacers. After driving it for a year, the ride is good but just maybe a little soft. You should maybe keep one more leaf than I did.
Did you convert your 40 axle to spring over? Do you have any more detailed pictures? I am about to be doing that.
Aaron, thanks for the info. I'm using the 40 spring pack on a deuce rail setup. It's helpful to see the your spring setup. I hadn't thought about needing spacer leaves. I'll plan on leaving at least 6 leaves. Trevorsworth, I don't know if your question was for me or Aaron. I'm keeping the stock 40 behind the axle spring pack on a flat rear crossmember. I was trying to find out how many leaves to remove for a good ride and whether I should reverse eye the main leaf. Tony
Only you can say if the main leaf should be reversed because nobody knows the height of your crossmember. We would just be guessing. As for removing leaves, I'd think that a light A high boy would need maybe half the leaves of a fully loaded stock 40. Keep the main, remove the next, keep the next, remove the next, and so on. Keep the stock top leaf with the tapered edges. Don't throw any away in case you need to add some back in.
Thanks Alchemy, I think I'll get a reversed eye main leaf; one of the eyes on my current main leaf is rusted through and I need to replace it. I appreciate the advice on the leaves, it makes sense to start out with half the leaves and go from there. Tony
Thanks Aaron, and thank you for your videos, I've been following them for the last couple of years and find them very helpful. Tony
