Been thinking Cragars are a bit modern for my 1938 pickup. So I bought some cheap VW smoothie hubcaps and put them over the spokes to see. I'd have to make clips off the lug nuts to use them. Kinda like it. I could run them during the week and pop them off on the weekends when I go cruising for babes.
unique idea - likely do not not want to drill holes - but, how about using the screw that holds on stock S/S center cap to help hold down big caps? - could use a bullet type nut on face of big caps
I thought about acorns but didn't seem right. But yeah, some of these bullet valve caps maybe. Hmm.. Thanks! If one ever gives me a second look I will!
Doesn't sound like an easy swap back and forth if you have to add or remove clips every time you change to hubcaps or back. But if you don't mind the work, I guess it's not a bad look.
The big ones go in the bed. So far the easiest, and best way I've though of is to use the stock VW clips, attached to 1 inch flat stock bolted under the lug nuts. But yeah, that would be funky looking without the caps unless removed. Better would be to weld them to a round clamp around the hub of the spokes, where the cap goes on. One screw to remove. Opinions running around 50/50, same with me. I will make the adapters though, otherwise the dog gets new dishes. Also a good way to save corroded Cragars.
Please don’t take this the wrong way,,,,,I truly mean no disrespect . I have went back and forth several times and compared the pics with the covers ,,and without . I think the covers take away from the looks of your truck . The rear proportion to the rest of the truck as a whole is what catches my eye . The pic with the covers makes it look like the shirts airbrushed in the 70’s,,,,,,the tires look ballooned and abstract . The Cragar wheels look very good as is . Yes,,,,I am a fan of Cragar S/S wheels,,,,,and I like covers as well . Anyway,,,,,that was my observation,,,it’s your truck,,,,do as you please . Again,,,I didn’t mean to be insulting . I think it is a cool hot rod as it is ! Tommy
Hey no problem, appreciate the input! It's not like I chopped the top 8" or something. In fact with the brackets I made I didn't have to modify the caps, an easy sell for a few bucks loss. But I'll hang in there with them for awhile. Fingers fit behind between the spokes, just a straight pull.
I'm liking it too...not a big fan of Cragars either. A pretty ingenious way to change the look of the truck on the cheap.
I'd be bothered about the new brackets scratching my Cragars and also would worry about lug nut torque.
No offense, but I'd never run without the hubcaps and have to see those ugly clips on there. I'd have to remove them anytime the hubcaps were removed.
Still bombing around with the caps on one side only. I put electrical tape over spokes where the caps contact, hides the little bit of spoke that shows and protects the Cragars, not that they are any prize. The caps have a rolled edge where they contact.
Why not leave it like that? Just come up to the car on the side you're in the mood for. You can only see one side at a time, and neither side when you're behind the wheel.
Reverend Raymond and the Chain Smoking Alter Boys. And if I’m out past nine, they better have a damn good buffet. I kinda like the look with the caps, but not the off look with the brackets.
