I was just at a local junk yard today and found 3 Cragar wheel spinners, 2 slots, and 4 Torq Thrust wheels. The 3 spinners and 2 slots were in the back seat of a 65 Buick. It had Cragar looking wheels on it. I searched high and low but could only find 3 spinners. I noticed that one is different from the other two. Anyone know when they are from? I also could not find any markings on the 2 slots. Anyone have a idea what they are? I am going back tomorrow to get the Nailhead out of it. Wheels are 10 bucks each there so I'll probably get the 4 off the car tomorrow.
Heres my '68 Javelin with a set of Crager Mach 8s that have a production date of 1974. They still look good after a lot of clean-up.
Here's a scan of Art's book. Art is my great uncle and just turned 80. He started working for Roy Richter in '54 and worked there for over 20 years. There's a sign in his house that says "I spent all my money on booze, women, and cars. The rest of it I wasted." Shane
When I was 15 and building my 55, I got a set of Cragar's cheap, so that's what I ran. I thought they were the "****" back then. They are gone now. The car is not!
Yup, they were spun. (http://books.google.com/books?id=cr...sazuAQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1) Did your friend drive them on the street?
Here is a picture of a brand new set of Cragars (Street Pro Series 390) that I got in January 2009 for the Grand National Roadster Show. This is their new line with aluminum centers which allows for various color changes. Right now they only offer silver and black......more to come later. With the demise of American Racing, Cragar is poised to make a big impact again on the market.
Your slot wheel resembles the ET "unilug" type mag. It had oblong bolt holes to accomodate both 4 1/2 and 4 3/4 bolt circle patterns. The lug washers had offset holes which were turned 180 to "make" the wheels 4 1/2 or 4 3/4 pattern,
Actually these wheels would fit 4-1/2" to 5" bolt patterns. The offset washers could be turned one way for 4-1/2", the other way for 5" and there were washers with the holes centered that fit 4-3/4"
I seem to remember the SST being the "new" cragar wheel in the early 80s, had a friend with a set on his 69 Camaro SS, and another with a set on his 75 Nova SS, back in 80, or 81....my 68 Camaro RS was sportin Rocket Wheels!
Does anyone have part numbers of the SST's? I can find the 15x7 with 2.75" Backspace (54717) in NOS I need 4" BS though and with them being so old, no one wants to look up any numbers at cragar even though a lot of places still have NOS. Thanks
I have some Jegs catalogs from a few years ago, and I'll try to remember to look when I get home. I didn't even realize they had quit making the SS/Ts!
For you guys with Caragar S/S wheels and want to do something a little different try this.........I saw this on a 55 chevy and tried it myself just use a centercap a horn ****on and a little JB weld
aaaahhh come on it was a $35 find at Scottsdale good guys last year, its a keeper but if I see another one Ill grab it for ya
None of my old catalogs have any part numbers for street wheels. Sorry, man. You might try e-mailing Brad Danbom (braddanbom@cragar.com) at Cragar. He should be able to find out, or if not, point you to someone who can. For one of my questions about S/Ss, he directed me to Bob De Young (Bob.DeYoung@carlisletire.com), who is the Cragar brand manager at Carlisle Tire.
