Hope the best for you on that man. Sometimes we get into cars so much that we forgot about the basics, I know I have. Saterday I was checking under the hood after driving my car around for a bit and the radiator cap blow up in my ******* face and sent me to the hospital for some antibotics and a patch. You just get used to messing with cars you forget about things like keeping your head away from the ****ing radiator.

Glad your o.k. man- You'll get it all back in order. At least it was already photographed for the KC Star article; Imagine if you did that the day before the shoot? Anyway, hope the foot is o.k. Don't wreck anything till I get back in town, eh?

PS-Coincidently, I was working on the Merc yesterday, and had one of the jackstands partially fall over while I was under the car- Scary business.

I hope you getter soon, garage doors and hot rods are replaceable.

  9. Kevin,
I'd tell you a story or two but it would make any difference. Nothin makes you feel as sick as breakin' a ride you put your life into.
Glad you're still on this side of the gr*** bro.
Probably won't be much help but I got a 9' garage door new in the box that I'm not going to use. You're welcome to it, if it'll help or if you can trade it for what you need.

That ****s Kevin, I had that happen to me ones as well, luckily it was a steel door and I was able to straighten most of it out before my parents got home.

Years ago I was rebuilding a carb and I was so proud I got the car running right, that I wanted to show my dad. I took the carb off and was fixing one last fuel leak.

My parents pulled up in the drive and I was excited and wanted show my dad how well it ran. I put my hand through the window and turned the key, fire instantly shot out of the shaker hood. My dad put out the fire with his jacket, and said good job son next time you might want to put the carb back on the car before you do that.

Hope the ankle gets better quick.

    Hot Rod accidents are scary.......

I smashed my roadster into the garage really hard when I first got it done... It was a mess. I diddn't get hurt though..

    Glad you are OK.

It 's a different feelling when it happens. The excitment of the car running in the first place... and then getting hurt and crashing it....

It's kind of like that movie when the kid gets a BB gun for Christmas and his mom warns "Don't shoot you're eye out!"
    and then he does.

And double damn ! I've had that happen twice. The first time I was able to catch up to the car (a model A roadster) and jump in. Good thing it was pointed out toward the street. The second time was when I was messing around under the hood of a stock '41 Ford that had the push ****on on the starter relay. My buddy's kid was standing between the car and the back of the garage. They wanted to hear the old flathead run so I push the ****on not realizing that the car was in gear. It is a good thing the aircleaner was off. I choked it off with a hand over the carb. I was on the very edge of wetness over that one.

Alright, I'm done feeling bad about it and I can walk without a limp. So this post needs to go someplace besides being a get well card.

If you had a car with '39 pedals and transmission, what would you consider the cleanest way to install a switch? Anyone done this before and have a specific part that fits well? I remember looking through the parts books at brake switches but the mechanical kind all seemed a bit bulky

  17. So, does it match the chainring scar on your other leg?

  18. Launched my former shoebox into the vice on my workbench the same way. Luckily I was in the car and that's all that happened. Sorry to hear it.

I'd be curious on that too, but I think that Eyeball had the best solution... having your **** in the seat, when you start it. It is something I will probably try to heed. I try to learn from others errors. It doesn't always work, and at time makes me feel like less of a man:D . Glad your movin and the car aint to bad. Later.

Its hard when you goof up.

just remember to never, never turn engine over without sitting in the car.
(i done it standing outside of the car a couple of time's myself, with only minor damage ;-))

I would use the normal brakeswitch, and a relay connected so that the starter wont turn over until the brake is depressed. This should be the easiest/cleanest solution

i would prolly look at a micro switch similiar to what used as a full throttle switch on a nitrious system then just put a relay off that in the ignition circuit. Those switches are tiny and could be mounted so any part of the clutch pedal ***embly would just have to push the lever in on the switch a bit to work

    just my idea

Most easiest would have to be a mechanical brakelight switch mounted on clutch pedal--a true neutral switch would, I think, require 4 switches, one in each end of each shift rail tube, and more wiring than the whole rest of car!

Streetrod places all sell one that is basically an early Chevy switch that could be hidden at base of pedal or anywhere along clutch linkage. Use something automotive, a microswitch might turn into a puff of smoke at a bad moment.
As a point of controversy, I would add an out-of-the-way toggle switch to override the safety--someday you might have to drive off of the interstate on the starter to get a dead car out of high speed traffic, and you need to be able to use the solenoid ****on under the hood for valve work and such.
An alternate: add a second momentary switch on other side of dash (again, with an override switch) so that you need to push or toggle two things to kill yourself...
An idiot can always find a way--I once pinned myself to a garage wall with my legs trapped between the bumper guards of my '48 while running the valves and turning engine over BY HAND in gear...it's truly amazing that any rodders reach middle age...
Also, glad you're not shopping for a flatomatic now! Wife may seem cool, but you just gave her lifetime blackmail power! Like my friend who shot himself in the leg with a slightly illegal pistol and had to have his wife help excavate and sew...

when i typed my reply i was drunk as hell...,but the next day on my long *** drive to nashiville i was thinking about hotrods and then i was thinking of model A's and then i thought of grimloks wild ride..and then i thought about my reply to his thread,,and then i thought how stupid my reply was,,,

mainly because the main issue was not a saftey switch,,but rather starting your stick shift car while standing outside...of course you COULDNT start it from outside if you had said switch,,,but still the main thing to remeber with a stick shift is to always remember to "row the gears" before you start it

    ok,good night,,

I'm glad Grim and the car are going to be OK. Both are too cool to be out of commission.

But a neutral safety switch is not the answer. The answer is to have your ****ing feet on the brake and clutch.

  28. That doesn't help...!!!

Don't shortcut this safety feature for your sake and especially others...!!!

Ask Nashman what had happened to him at the Hunnert Car Pileup..., Max Wedge started his sedan and it leapt backwards and pinned Nashman against another car...!!!!

If it wasn't for Max Wedge shutting it down Nashman may have been seriousely injured...!!!!

I don't know what happened with Nashman. I'd be interested to hear the story.

What I do know is that if you've got the clutch pushed in to disengage the transmission and your foot on the brake, the car doesn't jump anywhere when you start it up. At least that's been my experience for the last 20 years.

My point is not that neutral safety switches are a bad idea. My point is that starting up heavy machinery without having your hands and feet on the controls is a bad idea. Switches can fail. And if neutral safety switches encourage people to start their cars by leaning in the window...well, DRD57 had a neutral safety switch, didn't he?

I worked in the farm equipment business for twenty five years and about every year a farmer would jump start his tractor in gear and get run over. You were LUCKY! Glad it turned out OK. Everyone say it with me now, NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH.
