Looks like a loose rendition of the Lincoln Futura. maybe a Go-Kart, or amusement park ride

The decal on the fin seems to be on the original color. Maybe it can be sanded for clues.

I remember driving those at an amusement park when I was a kid. They were powered by a small gasoline engine and rode on what looked like small trailer tires. The ride was supposed to be a 'highway' and there was a metal rail down the center of the road so that the car would not hit the guard rails, even if you let go of the steering wheel.

Sounds pretty pedestrian today, but it was big fun back then!

If you go to this site: http://fantasyfarm.org/
and scroll down about 2/3 of the page, in the left column you'll see "turnpike cars". Click on it and you can see similar cars driving around a course. I can seem to remember that either there was more than one manufacturer or the bodies were updated at some point. The cars in the video have a more angular front end than the body in this thread.

Originally I was thinking it was a Trimex http://www.roadkillontheweb.com/mex1.html but the construction is all wrong and is larger than the scale they used. It is not a Powercar product either. Looking at the body mounts I would have to agree that it is an amusement park ride car but I can not tell you what manufacturer.

http://www.jrcentral.com is my website that deals with powered promotional cars.

Here are a couple examples of Pretzel MFG. company rides that used Powercar vehicles on a track like Dave B. mentioned. The first one is a breakdown track that can be moved with the fair and the second it a bolt down version for permanent locations.

    1966 Mustang

I own the factory body molds for both of the above rides.

More than likely your body was a track driven vehicle like the two above with two steering wheels.

mount it on a shortened VW chassis...

  19. One of the parks here has a paved track with a steel center rail in it, from having cars like this in it at one time - I would guess the larger size from the looks of the photos.

The actually have a Wiki page about them

    From Wiki
The Streco Turnpike Cruiser was a two-passenger open microcar built especially for amusement park and carnival use by the Streifthau Manufacturing Company of Middletown, Ohio (1958-1985), a family-owned firm managed by Edgar and Lindy Streifthau.
Records show that approximately one hundred and sixty-seven Streco Turnpike Cruisers were built, and fourteen amusement parks are known to have ordered the cars, which were powered by single-cylinder Kohler Company K-Series engines through matched centrifugal clutches at governed speeds of approximately six to eight miles per hour in single file along pre-fixed guideways and/or on winding pathways and, in some parks, with a fixed center guiderail to limit lateral motion. Streco Turnpike Cruiser bodies were constructed of solid fiberglass, and featured prominent tailfins (in conjunction with the fashion of the period), and also full wraparound bumpers for driver/passenger protection. The first series Streco cars were distinguished by standard twin-headlamp configurations, with the more rugged second series cars distinguishable by their quad headlamps.

Yours is obviously a first series car with single headlamps
