Projects Crazy Transmission Adapter Shoppin' Lists

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Abomination, Mar 1, 2009.

  1. A number of years back (late 1980's), I made an adapter to put a TH400 or a 700R4 on the back of a Hudson engine. Worked great. Made a few copies, along with some disc brake kits.
I Couldn't get the Hudson people interested (they were insulted- "are you saying Hudson parts aren't any good?") so I sold the patterns and leftover pieces.

In the very early 1970's there were a few of us Stude-nuts who needed some 4-speeds to race with. We made several adapters to put a Chevy 4-speed on a Stude bellhousing with a Chevy racing clutch.

When the race tracks started insisting on safety ****tershields (probably to get rid of the oddball "old" cars. They didn't make everybody run them, just certain ones. yes there was a time when they were considered very UNcool), a few of us got together and used a few Lakewood ****tershields, adapted them to fit the Stude engines and then ran Zoom clutches, Top-Loaders, and Chevy 4-speeds. It also had a safety benefit and was strip-legal.

In the late 1970's I mated a T-10 four speed from a Javelin to a later model Jeep transfer case (late model in the late 70's that is). One time only. Drove it and towed with it for years.

A couple decades ago I was asked to find a way to put a modern drag racing automatic behind a Stude, so I started making a few Studebaker-to-Chevy adapters for a few drag cars we were building at the time (there were four of us "fast guys" racing). That way we could run Powerglides, TH350's, TH400's, and later the 700 R4's.
The whole idea was to be able to use a trans-brake ****** on our Studes at the drag strip. The idea caught on and people started asking for them to put on their own street cars.
I made and sold THOUSANDS of those. Later, people started making their own copies and slightly different versions of it. I have seen some pretty scary versions made by a few people without their studs properly anchored etc. I have even seen a bendable aluminum version.

Here's mine built with good old fashioned American overkill....

  2. WOW!
I am surprised that I still have a few pics from 1973 where we were adapting Lakewood Oldsmobile ****tershields on Studebakers for drag racing.
OOPs, that could be a later auto trans on the floor nearby. This pic might have been from the late 80's when I made another batch of them.
I'll keep looking for the other 1973 Florida Adventure pics with our projects, "nearly-new" muscle cars everywhere on the street, and cool Studes in them. Oh, to be a young kid again going off to more adventures....

Note the one pic with the WEBER aluminum flywheel for Studebakers.
That was back when we bought the aluminum racing flywheels for $50 each. new.
The ****tershields were expensive. I believe they were about $170 back then. (plus my added charge for the machine work)

Those really were the good old days..... Building oddball cars ... driving dune buggies into the waves at Daytona Beach (I know it was dumb, but it was too much fun to stop)..... cool hot rods.... work for a week, camp on the beach for a week, work, visiting stranger's beach parties, race, work, explore, build strange things..... days were much too short...
