I've got this deuce tudor I've been trying to sell but at my price there's no interest. Been thinking maybe I'll have to build it? I am not a painter and definitely not an artist. Thinking of maybe adding some new Brookville and Rootlieb sheet metal and having it painted to match the patina of the body and grille shell. Any ideas?
Here's Don's page on doing the patina on the roadster http://donshotrodpage.net/Project-32/Page16.htm
@krylon32 There is a guy around LA (I think) that has a killer fendered '32 roadster, I'm sure you have seen the car. It was involved in a wreck and when they fixed it, they matched the patina on the car. Looks like it never happened. I'm sure the power of the H.A.M.B. will help you down the right path.
This is how I got my orange looking toast rust. gave it the bare metal a light version of the paint you have, but like a porous primer paint. Then just leave it out for years. Or bring it tow the ocean a lot. Another way is give a good coat of the color match, then burn through one edges and area that would get the most crustiness over time. I know fake patina is taboo, but yeah HWY99 Don's 32 has paint with matched patina. Mine is toasty, which might go away soon anyhow.
Maybe lower the price you are asking, save the work and effort (and cost to buy parts) and get it down the road. But I’m kinda practical like that
Take some pics can you just rattle can it a few different shades of whatever colour and wet sand it ? Spray some vinegar or other acid on it to flash rust in some spots ? or repair it and paint it and sell it ? next guy might not care about patina . there are a lot of homes getting flipped in my area ( houses built in the 50’s with original owners ) Owners go in and do some cheap and fast Reno’s . Sell the house and the next guy tears it all out and does it “ their way “ some times you can’t win for trying .
Patina is on an old br*** or silver lamp….what you need it to help along the rust.. spray on some salt water a few days, rinse, wipe with scotch bright pads…
OP has thick skin. Just hate to see someone wanting what they feel something might be worth and sit on it for someone else to sell when they are gone.
Thanks for the suggestions. I was asking for advise on patina not marketing. I've probably owned and sold nearly as many 32's as anyone and have always priced them fairly and they have always sold. I may die with this one? Backing off the price will be my wife and kids decision after I'm gone.
My sedan body isn't showing any rust, just a darkening of the original paint and belt line. If it was rust and flaking paint I think I could do something but this darkened paint has me in a quandary. Some where in the bodies life it had a couple patch panels installed which were metal finished on both sides and whoever did the job matched the original paint perfectly. If I wasn't such a dummy I'd post pictures but we've over trying to teach me how before to no avail
you said in your ad that you could email them....how about trying to send them to jforb427@gmail.com and I can post them.
Posting pictures is super easy, here is the tutorial... https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/how-to-post-images-on-a-thread.922350/
I get that, many think of “patina” differently as the next person does. I’d ***umed (without pics” ) as many others who replied on how to age your panels to match. Yes, pics would have been a qualifier
Dang near perfect I’d drive that. get some brown/red primer tinted that color. Some black, blue lacquer whatever color it was. to go on top here and there. Drag the fenders behind the lawn mower. chunk some rocks at ‘em Add a couple booger welded up splits Instant new old fenders
That’s pretty neat, you’ve got a mix of maroon, blue, green and brown it looks great as is and would be a shame to paint it shiny. I’d try to rattlecan some flat maroon, blue and green on the new pieces to match what you have and lightly fog some red oxide over it.
*****in' Man...... I wouldn't touch it. You will regret it if you do. But it is your car, so do what makes you happy.
