I need some, I just got the shipment of "universal" trim clips from nightprowlers, and I"ll just say they're not all that universal. Not complaining about night prowlers though, sounded like good people over the phone. I"m just irritated that I now have $30 worth of nothing. ANYWAY, What have you guys done to attach your trim when real trim clips are no where to be found, I don't have a shop to make my own clips either, so I'm lookin' for something REAL home brewed. I know at least one person on here has the answer i need. Anyone need some universal trim clips?

3M double sided tape. 300 PSI required for removal. Now your average hardware store tape. Body shops may have it. The paint will peel off before the tape will.

Local hardware store has these stock steel strips maybe 1 1/4" wide and maybe 1/8 thick (just guessing, I'm at work now), predrilled every inch or two down the center. It's relatively cheap.
Got a strip of that and used my grinder to cut it off in desired sizes. Made kinda square donuts with round centers, attached with screws thru centers and washers behind fender and this seemed to work for me. You can tip the squares sideways to catch the corners in the trim, if ya know what I'm sayin. Easier to do than to describe.
Not very much of a tech post, but half-assed tech is something that I can do. And Duct Taping my trim fast was just a little too primative even for me.
    Hope this helps.

On 3m tape...here's a tip.....I use 3m weatherstrip adhesive along with the tape...works like contact cement...get your air chisel for removal. I have also used black "window urethane" in a caulking gun for troublesome attaching situations. It holds in windshields good enough that the glass becomes part of the structure of the car. And glass is smooth, so urethane will adhere to any smooth surface.

I have a little of that 3m tape, I'll run out there and stick one of the smaller pieces on and see how it holds. I didn't think the stuff would work that good with metal trim, my teacher at school told me to use the metal ones anyway. but he gave me a c so fuck him, I'll give it a shot.

I have some of that weatherstripping glue too, but I dunno about having to use a chisel get get the trim back off if need be. My brother works at a hardware store, I'll call him and see if they have those strips you mentioned.

  11. Theres a company called Auveco that sells damn near every trim clip made. If you have access to a body shop, they probably have a catalog. Or try to find them on the web. Its been a while since I've dealt with them (before computer) but theyre still around.
The double stick works good too, thats what all the new cars use. Or something similar. It takes an act of congress to remove them.

Is this for the 50 Shoebox custom?
Have you considered leaving the trim off?

not for the shoebox, the shoebox has been in hibernation for awhile, this is for the 60 pontiac. The shoebox may come out of hibernation soon though...It looks like the double sided trim tape may just work on this trim since it's so small, I just ran out so I only got one side on there. I got some of the metal strip stuff to try to use on the eyebrow looking pieces that go above the headlights, I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Just more info...there are two types of 3m double sided tape....green and orange backing colors...the orange is "higher tack"...I've also used 3m emblem adhesive as the second part of the equation.

the orange backed tape is what I've got and after driving around town a little bit it seems to be holding ok on the side I put the trim on. I picked the tape up at wal-mart, so I guess I'll have to brave a trip there tomorrow with all the last minute shoppers so I can have all the trim on it Christmas day.

  20. What kind of clips do you need? I just go to my local auto body supply. They have every kind of molding retainer I've ever needed. Most of it in stock, next day if not. They get the stuff from W&E. Try wesales.com Or you can just hack it on with tape [IMG]

The best 3M tape you can get is called VHB tape. Comes in widths of up 2ft. I have put together hundreds of plastic signs with this stuff over the years, it is clear with a red removable backing. You won't find this shit in a hardware store try a sign supply store. It's not cheap and you will wreck the trim if you try and remove it (something to keep in mind with any double sided tape). They also make some less agressive stuff too some of which is really thin so it won't be noticeable between the trim and paint. By the way 3M have a section who just r&d D/S tape so I guess they take it pretty serious. [IMG] [IMG]

If you use the doublestick tape you can remove it by using dental floss and scraping/dragging it through the tape.

It is a comman way to "shave" emblems on new cars
